Fiji Islands - A Tropical Paradise

An island paradise that has a total of about 322 islands in its range and 116 of those are inhabited. The main population however lives on 2 major islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The diving and snorkeling are fantastic. The islands have fringes of coral in them. The real beauty of Fiji lies in its people and its natural beauty. One finds a diversity of culture in Fiji, The people there are from various races and backgrounds. They are influenced by Melanesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and Polynesian cultures. The local people are in a minority. The people of Fiji are friendly and take kindly to foreigners, probably since most of them came from other places themselves.

Fiji has a temperate climate and can be enjoyed the whole year; however May to October is the dry season, and is the best time to go. The rains are infrequent during that time and the temperatures are something to escape to, from the strong winters of the Northern Hemisphere. The chances of getting a tropical cyclone in winter is low as are the rainfall and humidity. Most years Fiji has a stable climate thanks to the large expanse of water surrounding the islands. The windward sides of the mountains of Fiji invite the most rainfall. The tropical cyclones generally come in from November to May like unwelcome guests but do not do much damage.

Lapita settlers founded the islands around 1500 B.C. The Lapitas were a coastal fishing people who turned their emphasis onto agriculture. They also headed thousands of miles to Tonga Samoa. Cannibalism was a common thing among the people there. In 1643 the first European sighted the islands of Fiji. There was an influx of missionaries in the middle 1800's when they were trying to convert the local people.

The Bouma National Heritage Park is strewn with natural beauty and has a couple of huge waterfalls. They have natural swimming pools that one can visit. The trails are a bit hairy but they have guardrails and resting points built which help the weaker traveler. The birds at Colo-I-Suva are magical in their singing and the flowers will draw you in. You can visit the museum to see an array of interesting sights of the old jewelry, cannibal utensils and musical instruments. You will also find the Chiefs whale tooth necklaces and war apparatus. The parliament house in Fiji is marvelous. It was opened in 1992. The sand dunes of Sigatoka are a natural wonder that has to be seen to be appreciated. They have been forming for thousands of years and are of a grayish color as opposed to sand dunes in Africa.

Fiji islands are beautiful to see and visit. They draw you in and do not want you to go back. The natural beauty the birds and the beaches all beckon the traveler to where it is difficult to say no to it. Fiji Islands have to be on the list for places to see before you die.

Walt Disney World For Teens

Can teens really have fun at a place like Walt Disney World? Absolutely! Actually, be prepared to have the time of your life. It's a safe place to assert some independence from your parents, a place you'll never forget. Here are some of the best experiences for teens at "The Most Magical Place on Earth":

Have a Splashing Good Time at Disney's Water Parks

For a blast of a time, head to one of Disney's two water parks. Blizzard Beach has a melting alpine resort theme where chairlifts carry swimmers instead of skiers. It's a place for daredevils to challenge wild, rushing water and death-defying slides including the Summit Plummet, a 120-foot slide reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour. Those a bit less adventuresome will love Typhoon Lagoon, a tropical fantasyland offering a wave pool with the tallest simulated waves in the world as well as a chance to snorkel among tropical fish, leopard and nurse sharks, and picturesque coral at Shark Reef.

Live it Up at Downtown Disney

After the parks close hop a bus from your Disney resort for a night on the town at Downtown Disney. Highlights include Disney Quest with five floors of interactive games, a 24-screen AMC Theater, a Cirque du Soleil show, and over 60 shops and restaurants. Favorite dining choices for the younger crowd are Planet Hollywood and Rainforest Café. And definitely consider House of Blues where teens are allowed to attend some of the almost daily concerts in their live music venue next-door.

Cool Off at One of Disney''s Resort Pools

When your parents are wondering which resort to book for your Disney vacation, be sure and put your two cents in and steer them toward one with a great pool. Disney's very best uniquely themed pools include the Yacht and Beach Club's Stormalong Bay, a 3-acre mini-water park, the Swan and Dolphin's lush, grotto-style lagoon pool, the boulder-strewn wonderland at the Wilderness Lodge with its very own erupting geyser, and the Volcano Pool at the Polynesian Resort with its luxuriant waterfall, smoking peak, and perfect views of Cinderella's Castle.

Plan Some Watersport Fun

Disney's Contemporary Resort is the place for water-ski, parasail, wakeboard, kneeboard, and jet-ski action under the guidance of a professional instructor. There's nothing better than a bird's-eye-view of the Magic Kingdom as you parasail high above the Seven Seas Lagoon. And the action down below on Bay Lake is a blast! For reservations call 407-WDW-PLAY up to 180 days in advance, and be sure to bring a parent along to sign a waiver to participate if you're under age 18.

Pilot Your Own Boat

What could be more fun than renting a Sea Raycer, a 2-seater mini-power boat perfect for zipping around Disney's waterways and lakes. It's a great pastime for teens with a valid driver's license (those under 18 must bring along a parent to sign a waiver). You'll get the most bang for your buck at one of the resorts near the Magic Kingdom (the Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, or Wilderness Lodge) where you'll find miles of recreation on the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

Scuba and Snorkel at Epcot's Living Seas

Scuba dive or snorkel in The Living Seas 5.7-million-gallon saltwater aquarium amid a variety of sharks, rays, fish, and turtles. Epcot's DiveQuest Program along with the Seas Aqua Tour using a Scuba Assisted Snorkel unit (snorkelers swim on the surface with a built-in flotation device while breathing compressed air from a regulator attached to a small tank) are two of the most exciting behind-the-scenes tours offered in all of Walt Disney World. Dives include all equipment, but be sure to bring a bathing suit. DiveQuest is open to certified divers, but those ages 14 and under need to dive along with a parent or guardian. The Seas Aqua Tour is open to participants under age 18 as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult. Call 407-WDW-TOUR for reservations.

Surf's Up at Typhoon Lagoon

"Hang 10" before park opening hours in the 2.75-million-gallon wave pool (some waves as high as 6 feet tall!) under the guidance of professional instructors with surfboards provided. Guests must furnish their own transportation to the park since Disney buses are not up and running that early in the morning, and those under age 18 must have a signed waiver from their parents to participate. Call 407-WDW-PLAY for reservations.

White-Knuckle Riding at Richard Petty Driving Experience

Lying next to the Magic Kingdom is this speedway where white-knuckle rides in a NASCAR Winston Cup-style race car are offered. If you are at least 16 you can participate in the Ride-Along Program where you'll ride shotgun at speeds of up to 145 mph for three laps around the track with an experienced instructor (riders 16 or 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian). Even more exciting, those ages 18 and older can drive the car themselves after an introductory class. If you just want to observe you can do so for no charge. Call 800-BE-PETTY for advance reservations.

Head for a Theme Parks

Last but certainly not least are the theme parks. If you're staying on Disney property it's a cinch to board a monorail or a Disney bus and head out to the parks on your own.

At the Magic Kingdom you'll find all the old nostalgic favorites like Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean. And don't forget to head straight to Splash Mountain, an unforgettable ride that ends in a plunge over a 5-story waterfall! Epcot's main attractions for fun-loving teens are Soarin' a fun hang-gliding experience in front of an IMAX size screen, Mission Space, a hair-raising rocket into space, and Test Track where you'll speed through hairpin turns and then barrel outside onto a high-speed banking loop at over 60 mph. At Disney-MGM Studios you'll be floored by Rock 'N' Roller Coaster and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, both a thrill a minute. Then there's the Animal Kingdom where a trip around the African savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris, back in time 65 million years at Dinosaur, and a trip to the Himalayas at Expedition Everest are quite the adventure.

Super thrill seekers should plan a day at Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure where attractions like the Incredible Hulk Coaster, Dueling Dragons, and The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman will leave your heart pounding.

So do you still think Disney is just for kids? I bet you can't wait to pack your bags. And don't forget to thank your parents on your return home for taking you to one of the most exciting places on the planet.

How to Find Romance at Walt Disney World

When you ask most people about what they think of a Disney World vacation they say that it is the perfect place for families with young children. But the Disney World Resort offer so much more and is the perfect destination for young and old alike, and even for couples on their honeymoon.

My husband and I were lucky enough to Disneymoon (that's a Disney Honeymoon) at the Disney World Resort. It has the perfect mix of fun and romance making it perfect for a romantic getaway.

1. Where to stay

The Resort has numerous resorts so there are plenty of options to choose from. If you're looking for romance then you'll want to choose a Moderate or Deluxe Resort.

My husband and I chose the Animal Kingdom Lodge which really was the perfect place to getaway. We spent many a quiet hour sitting on a rocking chair on the balcony watching the animals just roam the savanna. It's an extremely peaceful hotel and you feel like you've been whisked off to Africa.

Other romantic resorts include the Polynesian with its white sandy beaches and hammocks just perfect for lazing in, and for the ultimate in grandeur the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, for that turn of the century elegance you just wouldn't expect to find.

2. Where to eat

There are more than 100 restaurants to choose from on Disney property and some of them are extremely romantic. How about dining at the California Grill atop Disney's Contemporary Resort? Time it right and you can watch the Wishes fireworks spectacular bursting over Cinderella Castle as you linger over food which is just as amazing as the view.

For unparalleled charm and elegance put on your best dinner jacket and dress and head over to Victoria & Albert's at the Grand Floridian. Your intimate two hour dining experience comes complete with butler service and personalised menus for a truly unforgettable evening.

3. Where to find romance by day

If you are on your honeymoon then make sure you pick up your bride and groom buttons from Guest Services. My husband and I also splashed out on Bride and Groom Mickey ears. The reception we got from both Cast Members and guests was truly touching as people stopped to offer us their congratulations.

Experience the magic of the Wishes fireworks display at the Magic Kingdom or Illuminations over at Epcot for a romantic evening activity.

You might also enjoy finding yourself a bench in the Rose Garden by the Castle, or a rocking chair over in Liberty Square and just whiling away the hours watching the world go by.

You'll find so much fun and romance at the Walt Disney World Resort that you'll soon find yourself planning a return trip for your anniversary.

Oahu Vacation Rentals For Your Vacation Of A Lifetime

Bask in the sun and surf the warm waters of Wakiki Beach, the most famous beach in the world! Then shop in the exclusive boutiques of Waikiki, which offer such prestigious retailers as Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, and Yves Saint Laurent as well as more modest shops such as world-famous International Market Place. Don't miss the 150 stores and restaurants in The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center! And for duty-free shopping, the DFS Galleria is the only place foreign visitors to Hawaii can buy the world's leading luxury brands at duty-free savings. Above Wakiki climbs fabled Diamond Head, which offers a stunning 360 degree view of Oahu. Diamond Head got its name from British sailors in the late eighteenth century who saw crystals of calcite sparkling in the sunlight and thought they were diamonds. Oahu vacation rentals are the way to go to make your once-in-a-lifetime Oahu vacation perfect in every way. And check out some of the other great places that abound on Oahu, such as the 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu, which was home to Hawaii's last royal family, and is the only palace in the United States. Another attraction is the Bishop Museum of Natural and Cultural History, with its enormous collection of Hawaiian art and cultural artifacts. When you rent house Oahu you are near one of the most famous shrines in U.S. history, Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. These sites where the tragic events of December 7, 1941 propelled the U.S. into a Pacific war are a sobering and solemn experience. The USS Arizona sank in a few minutes taking over 1100 sailors down with it; the deck of the battleship can be seen a few feet down beneath the surface of the water. Another popular area attraction is the Battleship USS Missouri Memorial, with its animated museum of Pacific war history.

But the Honolulu area is just the beginning! Hawaii vacation rentals on Oahu's North Shore offer the best surfing waters in the world, with high rolling seas and myriads of board surfers challenging the waves. See the Bonzai Pipeline where surfers coast through the crashing waves. The Eastern Shore of Oahu is also worth a visit. Be sure to hike to the top of Makapuu Point in the morning to catch the spectacular views of Waimanalo Bay (to the north), and Sandy Beach and Koko Head (to the southwest). Between the months of December and May Makapuu Point is a terrific place to watch the whales. And top your Oahu dream vacation off with one of Oahu's famous traditional Hawaiian luaus! Held on a private beach east of Honolulu, Germaine's Luau features the traditional Polynesian music and dance, traditional Hawaiian games, and even lessons in how to make leis. The Polynesian Cultural Center's Ali'i Luau is held on Oahu's North Shore. The Royal Luau takes place at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and is the only luau on Waikiki Beach.

5 Essential Tahitian Honeymoon Tips

Is wedding planning taking a toll on your relationship (and your sanity)? Relax, it's natural to feel stressed out by the whirlwind of activity leading up to one of the most momentous days of your life. But once the cake has been served and your guests have left, you deserve a dream honeymoon to help unwind and celebrate. If your ultimate romantic getaway involves warm tropical breezes, sandy secluded beaches and romantic huts over the water then Tahiti (French Polynesia) is where you want to be. Here are 5 essential tips to help you have the romantic and relaxing Tahitian honeymoon you've always dreamed of:

1. Leave your heavy sweaters and coats at home: Blessed with warm tropical weather year-round, Tahiti makes for an ideal destination any time of the year. The islands generally experience two seasons: from June-October when the climate is cooler and drier with average temperatures in the low 80's and from November-May when the weather is warm and humid with average temperatures in the mid 80's. Pack light and dress comfortably.

2. Get off the main island: The group of South Pacific Polynesian islands often referred to as "Tahiti" (though officially named "French Polynesia") is made up of 121 exotic atolls and islands including such gems as Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine and Rangiroa. After exploring Tahiti Island and its capital, Papeete, be sure to venture off the beaten track and explore some of the nearby islands for more seclusion and romance. There are seemingly endless pristine white sand beaches, underwater caves, lush waterfalls and coral reefs for you and your partner to discover together.

3. Experience something truly spectacular: What better way to kick off your marriage than by creating memories to last a lifetime? Share a new adventure together by taking advantage of Tahiti's endless activities such as snorkeling, scuba, shark-diving, surfing, mountain trekking or staying in an over water bungalow. You'll return home with not only fond memories to cherish but also great stories to tell.

4. Take time to do nothing at all: Life on the islands moves at a remarkably slow pace. Make sure to chill out, relax, unwind, go with the flow and appreciate life's simple pleasures. Awaken and indulge your senses to the breathtaking bouquet of colors, scents, sounds, textures and flavors that surround you. Lounging lazily and gazing at the sea never felt so sublime.

5. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate: Nearly all of Tahiti's resorts, hotels, restaurants and vendors offer extra perks and discounts for newlyweds. Be sure to bring a copy of your marriage certificate to take advantage of these exclusive discounts and free upgrades.

Oahu, Hawaii Vacation Destinations & Activities

Oahu, the state capitol of Hawaii, is the most populated island. You'll find lots of nightlife and great shopping. For adventure, hike to the top of Diamond Head for a spectacular 360-degree view of Oahu and Waikiki, take surfing lessons, scuba dive, or ride an outrigger canoe. Consider snorkeling at Hanauma Bay amongst a myriad of tropical marine life.

An Oahu Hawaii vacation isn't just for the adventuresome. Leisure recreation is everywhere. One thing everyone must do is take the scenic drive over the Pali Highway, stopping at the historic site for a phenomenal view from the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center and while there stop and see where the famous big waves roll in. If you want to buy a lei, stop at one of the stands on Maunakea Street to see how they're made. Of course it goes without saying, when you are on a Hawaii vacation in Oahu, a visit to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial will be a highlight of the trip.

There are many nature tours to choose from on Oahu, Hawaii. Discover tropical rain forests, waterfalls, old Hawaiian Villages, visit an arboretum, or experience sunrise atop Diamond Head while learning of its history from your tour guide.

Many love to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu to, not only view original Hawaiian lifestyle, but also become familiar with many of the other Polynesian South Pacific Islands. This is a full day of entertainment and we recommend you buy your tickets in advance if you are traveling in a busy season.

For those who enjoy surfing, or simply like the thrill of watching some of the largest waves in the world pound the white Hawaiian sands, a visit to Oahu's North Shore is a trip you'll never forget. With waves reaching 20-30 feet in height, you'll witness some of the bravest surfers in the world risk it all as they tackle one of nature's most powerful forces. The North Shore of Oahu is where you'll find famous surf beaches like Pipeline and Waimea Bay. The biggest surf on the North Shore can be found during the winter months between November and February, while the summer months usually produce relatively small surf anywhere from a few feet in height to complete calm, which provides for great snorkeling and swimming in Waimea Bay.

A Hawaiian Vacation including Oahu would not be complete without a visit to King Kamehameha's Palace. The first King of Hawaii, under his rule, he conquered the Hawaiian Islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawaii in the year 1810. By developing alliances with the major Pacific colonial powers, Kamehameha preserved Hawaii's independence. Under his rule, he brought together all the other island's chiefdoms and united them under one government.

It goes without say, if this is your first Oahu Hawaii Vacation Rental experience, you will most likely visit Pearl Harbor in Oahu. Here you'll visit the Memorials of the USS Arizona and the Missouri. The Memorial is the final resting place for many of the battleship's 1,177 crew who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The Memorial commemorates the site where World War II began for the United States. The tour of the Memorial includes a 23-minute documentary film depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor, a short boat trip and a self-guided exploration of the Memorial.
If you're an aviation buff, you'll enjoy The Pacific Aviation Museum. It is located in the WWII Hangars in Pearl Harbor, based on Oahu. These hangers still bear visible scars of our nation's first aviation battlefield. Here you'll find exhibits of a 1942 Japanese Zero and its' opponent, the Wildcat. See the Stearman 18 year old George H. W. Bush soloed in as the war's youngest aviator. Learn the history of how aviation turned the tide of World War II. Flight Simulators are also available for an extra fee.

Stone Crab Lounge (Downtown Disney)

If you love whopping platters of fresh seafood then head to this bar at Downtown Disney's Fulton's Crab House. Feast on cold seafood platters of lobster, crab, and shrimp, or steaming bowls of clams and mussels either inside at the lively bar or outside at a waterfront table overlooking sparkling Lake Buena Vista Lagoon.

Wolfgang Puck Grand Café's Sushi Bar (Downtown Disney)

If you are spending an evening at Downtown Disney find a seat at the this very popular part of the Café, then order up a glass of sake accompanied by marvelous sushi and sashimi. Or choose something from the full Café menu with appetizers and small plates the likes of butternut squash soup, vegetable spring rolls, Wolfgang's famous wood-fired pizzas, truffle Maytag blue kettle chips, or cobb salad.

Exotic Islands Of Vanuatu, Fiji and Cook Islands?

Today Norm Goldman, Editor of sketchandtravel.com and Bookpleasures.com is honored to have as a guest, Ian Heydon, author, travel writer, award- winning comedy writer, artist and expert on Vanuatu, Fiji and Cook Islands

Ian is here to talk to us today about his expertise pertaining to these exotic islands.

Good day Ian and it is great to have you accept our invitation to participate in this interview!

NORM:

Can you tell our readers something about yourself and your expertise pertaining to Vanuatu, Fiji and Cook Islands.

IAN:

I first went to Fiji in 1993 and simply fell in love with the tropics, the warm, picture-postcard waters and the relaxed rhythm of life in general. I went back the following year and got my PADI Open Water Dive accreditation and, after another couple of trips realised I was working pretty much with a goal to travel more.

As I had a fairly successful career as a writer, I decided to see if I could write about travel and kill two birds with the one pen. In 1999, we took a family holiday to Vanuatu, where my wife Annie and I gave each other a Renewal of Vows' ceremony as an anniversary gift.

I felt automatically at home in Vanuatu and, as luck would have it, Annie was offered a job teaching at Port Vila International School. We decided that it would be an adventure, especially for the kids (then aged 7 and 3). Our 12-month contract extended to three fantastic years, during which time I got to write a lot, including my travel book on Australia, The Small Guide to A Big Country.

After leaving Vanuatu I bought a travel agent's licence to specialize in taking people, particularly honeymooners to this fascinating and rewarding part of the world. What I thought would be a hobby quickly became a business and in early 2004 I visited the Cook Islands and fell in love with another Pacific destination.

2004 also saw visits to New Caledonia, Fiji and three trips to Vanuatu. And I'm really excited about my first trip to Samoa this year. While I don't have any actual publications on the Pacific islands, I have three comprehensive information websites, Vanuatu A to Z, Fiji A to Zand Cook Islands A to Z.

NORM:

Could you tell our readers where these islands are located and an idea as to what differentiates one island from another from the point of view of topography, climate, and anything else you consider different?

IAN:

For me, living in Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji are so accessible, being just a few hours away. Visiting the Cook Islands means a stopover in New Zealand, but it is still just two meals and two movies. For Americans, the Cook Islands and Fiji are more accessible than Vanuatu (requires a stop in Fiji to connect or to be taken as a side trip from Australia or New Zealand). The climate in all destinations is similar, tropical with no great range in temperatures but it can get very humid in the summer months. These months are traditionally wet but El Nino seems to have changed that. In the Cook Islands, when it rains, they call it liquid sunshine. The warm water temperatures mean swimming is possible all year round.

· Vanuatu is by far the most primitive, if that's the right word. While Port Vila is a modern town with good infrastructure, excellent resorts and great restaurants, on many of the outer islands the ni-Vanuatu people live traditional village lives (ni-Vanuatu means of Vanuatu).

Cannibalism is part of the history and the last recorded case was in 1969, the year Armstrong and Aldrin took that one small step for man. Vanuatu also has a number of active volcanoes, including Mt Yasur, which is accessible and rewarding. Because of this, small earth tremors are common. Until 1980, when Vanuatu became an independent nation, the country was called the New Hebrides, a condominium, jointly run by the British and the French. There were both French and English schools, hospitals, police forces and, for a time, they even drove on both sides of the road!

Fiji is similar in topography, without the active volcanoes. For me, this is more a resort destination. While there is certainly a lot to explore, most visitors usually choose one or two resorts for their vacation.

The Fijian people are warm, outgoing (you can't go anywhere without being greeted with a beaming smile and Bula) and are far more akin to living on island time than the Indian population. It's a happy mix for tourists however, as the Indians pretty much make the business side of things run smoothly.

The Cook Islands also has rugged mountains, lush vegetation and pristine azure waters but a very different feel. The local people are Polynesian, not Melanesian, and comfortably marry the sensuality of Polynesia with a Christian way of life. It was from here that the Maori people followed migrating birds in their canoes to discover New Zealand. These days in the Cooks, English is spoken with a Kiwi accent and the currency is the New Zealand dollar (which makes it great value for US travelers). By contrast, the Fijian people are around 50% Fijian and 50% Indian. The ni-Vanuatu people are far more shy but just as friendly and welcoming. And, as their tourism slogan says, another time, another pace.

(Interviewer's Comments: If you wish more information on Cook Islands click HERE)

NORM:

How safe is it to travel to these islands?

IAN:

I find these destinations the safest on the planet. Yes, you may find petty crime, as you will anywhere, but on the whole people are far less materially minded and perhaps more family oriented. Our three years in Vanuatu were a reminder of when the world was a simpler and more secure place the children would nip off down the lagoon to play unsupervised and we knew they were safe& or a father would load a dozen children into the back of his truck and head out for a beach picnic no seatbelts but also no worries& it was a place where kids were allowed to be kids.

NORM:

Why would you consider these islands a good choice for a romantic getaway or wedding and honeymoon destination, and if you had to choose your favorite one, which one would it be and why?

IAN:

Firstly, for the scenery there's something really romantic about swaying palm trees, balmy weather and green-blue warm waters (I'm yet to see any artist reproduce these colours). But, more than this, I think it's that rhythm of island time that I've mentioned. You absorb the slower pace and are away from the routine of computers, traffic and deadlines. Choosing one place is hard for me, but I will go with the island of Aitutaki in the Cooks (about a 50 minute flight from the main island of Rarotonga). This huge lagoon (a volcanic crater) is just stunning, the local people are welcoming and there are some excellent accommodation properties and restaurants.

NORM:

What is the best time to visit these islands from the point of view of weather, costs, and crowds?

IAN:

I'm going to take an easy out and say anytime you want to travel and to use a local saying, whatever the weather, have a nice day. I was in both Fiji and Vanuatu in December 2004. Traditionally this is the hot, wet and humid season. In Fiji it hadn't rained for seven weeks and I didn't use air-conditioning in either country. Some people avoid traveling in February and March because of possible cyclones but these are pretty rare. I'm betting that 2005 will be cyclone free the water temperatures haven't risen much and there aren't an abundance of mangoes. For some reason the mango tree seems to be in tune with weather patterns and they have an over-abundance of fruit if a cyclone is imminent. Cost and crowd-wise, I would avoid the Australian and New Zealand school holiday periods but, having said that, all three destinations have adults only accommodation options.

NORM:

Do people travel to all three islands as a kind of package tour or is this not advisable?

IAN:

From Australia and New Zealand, packages often work out the most economical and efficient but, from the USA and Canada, it can be better to purchase the airfare and land content separately. I don't want to be hard on US travel agents but some do not have enough knowledge of Pacific destinations to offer the right advice (although having Vanuatu as the location for Survivor has raised the profile of this small country). I recommend using a specialist in travel to these regions and/or contact the accommodation properties direct. Most of them will still offer the package specials like Stay 7 nights, Pay 5 nights to people who book direct.

NORM:

If you had to choose an unequalled, exotic and unique areas such as parks, beaches etc in each one of these Islands to celebrate a wedding, which ones would you choose from the point of view of popularity and beauty?

IAN:

· Again, a hard one because, for example, some brides like to arrive in a canoe, which requires a lagoon location but to choose one in Vanuatu, a little resort called Tamanu on the Beach. It is 25 minutes from Port Vila. The bride and groom are welcomed with a glass of champagne or fruit punch, warriors perform a traditional dance and guard of honour, the ceremony is under a simple canopy on the beach, then champagne to toast and finger food while documentation is signed, a celebration lunch or dinner (on the beach or in the excellent little restaurant) followed by the night in one of the romantic French Colonial cottages.

· In Fiji, I will opt for a Tokoriki Island wedding. They have built a delightful wedding chapel (and there are plenty of beach options). Here there are also traditional Fijian warriors to escort the bride and a Fijian choir (these people know how to sing!) and a wonderful wedding dinner is part of the package. My main reason for choosing Tokoriki, though, is the new honeymoon bures with their private plunge pools.

While I said earlier that Aitutaki is my most romantic choice for a honeymoon, I would actually have the wedding ceremony on Rarotonga by beautiful Muri Lagoon, again with warrior and maiden escort. A beautiful part of some ceremonies is to be taken by canoe across the lagoon to the motu (uninhabited island) called Koromiri where the union is sealed with planting of a small coconut palm (uto). As the tree grows, so will the relationship. Apparently many couples return on their anniversaries to see just how much their tree has grown and to again taste the romance of the tropics.

NORM:

How far in advance should a couple prepare themselves for a honeymoon or romantic getaway to these islands?

IAN:

From our experience it depends very much on the situation. If couples plan to invite guests, it is nice to give a lot of warning so they can prepare financially (say, 9 to 12 months). Six months seems to be about average but we have had people deciding pretty much on the spur of the moment. The record goes to one couple visiting Vanuatu who were swept away by the romance of the place, decided to marry and were husband and wife in less than 48 hours (there was a lot of panic and appreciated cooperation from the registry office on that one!)

NORM:

What advice would you have for destination brides who plan to bring along a wedding party to these islands? It's a growing trend for destination weddings to now have a fairly sizeable wedding party sometimes about 50, so it would be great to get tips on group airline discounts, hotel blocks.

IAN:

An island wedding with guests can be really wonderful. In some cases, where guests arrive from different parts of the planet, the occasion can also serve as a family reunion. Group discounts for flights and accommodation can be arranged and sometimes it suits guests to stay in a different resort to the bride and groom because of budget or requirements (e.g. kids club or self-contained facilities). The largest wedding we organized in 2004 was for 67 guests travelling to Vanuatu from Australia, New Zealand, USA and the United Kingdom. We are currently planning one for 150 to 180 guests in Fiji, which will be interesting! Luckily there is a resort with a seaside chapel that can accommodate this many people. When compared to traditional weddings with all the trimmings, tropical weddings are very inexpensive and many guests combine the occasion with their annual vacation.

NORM:

How does one go about checking on the reliability of a hotel or resort in these islands when it pertains to service, food, etc?

IAN

Again, you can't beat specialist, local advice. To me, resorts and restaurants reflect the personality of the owners/managers and they can change literally overnight. Specialist agencies like ourselves should travel regularly to the destinations and have contacts on the ground for updates.

NORM:

What should people know about planning a wedding in these islands insofar as legal requirements are concerned?

IAN:

In broad terms, think three weeks/three days. In Vanuatu and Fiji, documents should be lodged at least three weeks prior to travel and couples should be in the country for three days prior to the ceremony. In some cases this is flexible. In Fiji, couples have to have an interview at the Registry Office and have original documentation with them. In Vanuatu, the faxed copies are sufficient and there is no interview. The Cook Islands require original documents and an interview (here, the 3-day rule can be shortened for a fee). Documents required include passports, birth certificates, Intention to Marry form and divorce papers or death of spouse certificate if applicable. One thing to always check is that passports have six months validity from the date of travel.

NORM:

Is there anything else you would wish to add as it pertains to romantic and wedding destinations in these islands?

IAN:

Two things: firstly, for the bride (and groom) to make a wish list. Most wedding tropical wedding packages can be tailored to the couples wishes, whether the ceremony be in a church, gardens or on a beach& and include little things like the color of the bride's dress (so flowers and table settings can complement) and whether they would like a CD compilation of their favourite music (you don't need last minute panics looking for a CD player etc!) And finally, no matter where couples marry (traditional or tropical), it really should be the wedding the couple wants. There will be plenty of time for compromise later when they have to decide who goes where for Christmas or thanksgiving!

Chile - Land of Poets

Chile - a land of poets and wine, a land of contrasting beauty, a land as romantic as some its famous citizens: Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Isabel Allende. Considered the longest country in the world, this South American nation offers a diversity of landscapes and travel opportunities from the Andes mountains to the Pacific Ocean, from Easter Island to the Antarctic, from fine vineyards to world-class ski resorts.

Where to Go

Northern Chile is known for its desert and coastal towns. Some of the most popular beaches are located in this area. Iquique and Arica are tax-free zones booming with commercial and touristic activities. La Serena and Los Vilos offer remarkable natural surroundings with large beaches and popular resorts.

Central Chile is popular for its fine vineyards, colorful ports and world-class ski resorts. This region is also famous for being home to Viña del Mar (Sea Vineyard) and its renown international music festival which takes place in February each year. Viña del Mar is a wonderful destination for most tourists - the city offers beautiful mansions, luxurious hotels, parks and gardens, theater, and sporting facilities as well as many beaches. Valparaiso, the most important port in Chile, is one of the largest cities in the country. Valparaiso is full of picturesque landscapes including hills, quarters, creeks, beaches, and romantic streets. Santiago, the capital, is a commercial center surrounded by nature - the San Cristobal and Santa Lucia hills border the city. A couple of kilometers from Santiago, you will find Cajon del Maipo, an eco-tourism center where you can enjoy adventure sports, mountains, hot springs, vineyards, and export-quality wines.

The South is famous for its fjords, glaciers and forests. In this region you will find interesting cities such as Valdivia, which is known for its early German settlers and traditions. Puerto Montt, made famous internationally by a popular song, is a bathing resort with beaches, hotels and restaurants that specialize in seafood and typical Chilean food. Further south you will find winter towns such as Cohaique, which is known for its museums and nature reserves, and Puerto Natales, which is known for its touristic infrastructure and its proximity to Torres del Paine National Park. Punta Arenas, one of the southernmost cities in the world, offers a world-class ski center and serves as a departure point for Antarctic expeditions.

Chilean islands include Easter Island, Robinson Crusoe, Chiloe and Tierra del Fuego. Easter Island, located approximately 3,700 km west of Chile, is also known as "Rapa Nui" in their native language or Isla de Pascua in Spanish. The island is famous for its large stone statues, Moai, which were carved by the island ancestors between 1100 and 1600 CE. Easter Island is also known for its Polynesian identity, beautiful coral beach, and adventurous diving. Robinson Crusoe Island, located on the Pacific Ocean at the same latitude as Valparaiso, has a unique development of flora and fauna and beautiful touristic areas.

What to Eat

Chile is particularly known for its wine, seafood and empanadas (turnovers). Lots of restaurants will offer typical Chilean food which consists of empanadas de pino (beef turnovers with onion, raisins, egg, and olives), empanadas de queso (deep fried turnovers filled with cheese), cazuelas (rice and meat soups), porotos granados (stew made with beans and corn), and curanto (a typical dish made of seafood, beef, chicken, pork, potatoes, and cheese). American fast food restaurants such as McDonald's, Burger King, and other chains can also be found in the big cities.

Where to Study

Chile is a preferred study abroad destination. It is common for students from European or North American colleges and universities to take interdisciplinary studies in Spanish in one of its many reputed universities.

Universidad de Chile
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile
Universidad de Concepcion
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso
Universidad de Santiago de Chile
Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María

Visas & Documents

Although American citizens need a passport to visit Chile, no visa is necessary. Citizens of many countries must pay a "reciprocity fee" of varying amounts. This fee is equivalent to the amount that country requires for entry visas from Chilean citizens. The fee is for tourists entering by plane, and the one-time charge is good for the life of your passport. Further information can be provided by the Consulate of Chile in your country of residence.

History of Disney World - How Walt Disney World Came About

Although Walt Disney never saw the fruition of Disney World while he was still alive, it was really his concept to make it. That's why relating the history of Disney World would naturally begin with him. His concept lived on even after he died through his brother, Roy Disney.

Walt Disney's Idea

Walt Disney didn't just want another Disneyland. He dreamed of something much more than Disneyland and yet similar to it. He still wanted to bring entertainment in his theme parks. But he wanted to have a place where he could constantly add or develop something new to his original park and structures. Not only that, he wanted to test his concepts of urban planning through this project. True enough, what now emerged as the EPCOT or the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow was actually sprung out of his ideas.

From Opening Up to Now

Walt Disney World opened in October 1, 1971, five years later after the death of Walt Disney. It opened up with Disney's Contemporary Resort, Polynesian Resort and Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

In the following year, Disney's Village Resort with the tree house and the vacation villas was added. Then Disney's Golf Resort and Discovery Island were next opened in the next two years. In 1975, the Fairway Villas and the Walt Disney Village Marketplace were built up.

Come June 1976, Disney's River Country Water Park was added. In 1980, the Walt Disney World Conference Center and another village resort, the Club Lake villas, were put up. Then in 1982, EPCOT came about.

In 1988, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Caribbean Beach Resort became available. And then 1989, more parks were added. The MGM Studios, the Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and Pleasure Island were opened.

In the years 1990 to 1992, more resorts were made for the guests. These were Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resort, Walt Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort, Port Orleans Resort, Old Key West Resort and Disney's Dixie Landings Resort. Disney Vacation Club and Bonnet Creek Golf Club were also added to the growing Walt Disney World.

In 1994, Disney's All-Star Sports Resort and Disney's Wilderness Lodge were made available. Then in 1995, Disney's All-Star Music Resort, Blizzard Beach Water Park and Fairytale Wedding Pavilion were installed.

The following year, the Disney Institute and Disney's Boardwalk Resort became ready. The Coronado Springs Resort followed in 1997. Disney's Wide World of Sports and Downtown Disney West Side came that same year too; while Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney Quest just came in 1998. In 1999, it was Disney's All-Star Movies Resort that was added. In 2001 and 2003, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and Pop Century Resort were added respectively. Finally, Disney's Saratoga's Springs Resort and Spa came about in 2004.

This completes the list of facilities made available through the years. The history of Disney World has really come a long way and it still continues each day as it touches the lives of many of its guests.

The Fireworks Shows at Epcot and Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World Are an Explosive Experience

You go to the Magic Kingdom, stand in the middle of Main Street looking toward Cinderella's Castle and watch; you find a railing around the World Showcase in Epcot and watch; you bypass the wings and sit anywhere in the wide center at Fantasmic and watch. Fireworks at Walt Disney World are an explosive experience every night! Plus its easy to find a great place to enjoy them.

It is also very likely that Disney is the largest single user of fireworks in the country. They probably classify as one of the most armed places in the world (but still the happiest place on earth). One estimate is that 1,800 firework shells are used every day at Walt Disney World. The Wishes fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom alone is only 12 minute and purports to use over 650 shells.

Disney World fireworks are very exciting and have interesting details. For example, remember to watch closely at the Magic Kingdom show, so you can catch Tinkerbell flying across the sky, best seen from in front of the castle. Jiminy Cricket will be your evening storyteller with a heartwarming musical background supplementing the event.

The fireworks at Epcot and the Magic Kingdom can be seen from many places at those Parks, but some people like to find that "special place" and make it our own for future visits. And if you look around the many Disney fan sites, blogs and boards on the Internet, everyone has their best place to watch.

A true fan favorite for Wishes is the Pirates & Pals Fireworks Voyage. This used to be just for Grand Gatherings (a perk for large group reservations) but no more. Along with your host, Patch the Pirate, you go by boat for a close-up of the Electrical Water Pageant (when scheduled) and then one of the most entertaining views of Wishes anyone can imagine, while floating on the Seven Seas Lagoon. On your ship you are entertained by a comical pirate Patch, leading you in song and Disney trivia games. When the ship anchors mid-lake, the view of Cinderella Castle and the extravagant fireworks show is simply "magical". When you return Patch talks a little about Peter Pan, and guess who meets you when the boat docks.

Apparently, for the Orlando area Disney fans, many have dinner and then hit the beach at the Polynesian Resort for the water pageant and the fireworks. This is a very popular location so it is crowded; but so are the parks and they take you at least a half-hour or more to get out of. From a resort, access to transportation is much closer.

At Epcot, the IllumiNations show can be seen from nearly anywhere around the lake, but some places are highly sought after, such as outside the Rose and Crown in England. But if you want the best views, be prepared to set yourself up to an hour in advance along World Showcase at waters edge.

IllumiNations is also a 12 minute show highlighted with a giant globe of the earth in the middle of Epcot's World Showcase Lagoon that opens like the petals of a flower showing a colorful fire and light show. Video along a water mist screen is included, surrounded by a thousand firework shells during the show along with torches and flames. In a word...Wow!

Each evening boatloads of visitors depart in rented watercraft from the docks of Disney's Contemporary Resort, Boardwalk Inn and Yacht Club headed for Epcot where, from a prime position on the lake, is a view of the Illuminations fireworks that can't be beat.

One of the best sources of information on days and times of fireworks presentations is the Internet. For example, on AllEars.Net, the most comprehensive Disney fan site on the web, you will find the hours to see fireworks at the parks. Another Walt Disney World fan web site is a live entertainment guide authored by Steve Soares that includes everything going on (where and when) in all the parks and elsewhere at Walt Disney World, including fireworks. And specifically for the Magic Kingdom show, Lou Mongello on his WDW Radio web site under the 'Trivia' tab, you will find detailed information about Wishes including details on the cast, the crew, the music and the history behind this spectacular pyrotechnic demonstration.

The fireworks at Walt Disney World are a one-of-a-kind experience, and have various iterations depending on the holiday seasons. These are events the whole family will enjoy and talk about for years to come.

What is Noni Fruit?

Noni fruit has gained worldwide notoriety in recent years for its health benefits, but also as a result of how those benefits have been exaggerated. Noni fruit is packed with nutrients - some well known, others more mysterious - that can help you to live a healthier, longer life. Several animal studies have shown that noni fruit can help to reduce tumors, enhance the immune system, and relieve pain.

Scientists in both the public and private sectors have widely demonstrated that the health benefits of noni fruit, while often wildly exaggerated, are not to be dismissed.

Noni fruit comes from the noni tree. When ripe, a noni fruit is about the size and color of the inside of a pear. It contains many seeds and has a distinctive, pungent odor. It is soft and dripping with juice.

The tree grows up to 30 feet tall in a large variety of habitats: volcanic terrains, lava-strewn coasts, clearings, and limestone crops. Its resiliency has allowed it to spread from its native Southeast Asia to neighboring India and the Pacific Islands, and as far as New Zealand, Australia, and South America. Its leaves are large, dark green, shiny, and deeply veined. Its small white flowers give rise to fruit that is bright green when young, and yellow or white when ripe.

Over 2,000 years ago, the inhabitants of what is now known as the Polynesian Islands domesticated the noni tree. They used all parts of the tree as food, medicine, and dye. It is said to treat many maladies, including constipation, diarrhea, skin inflammation, infection, mouth sores, fever, contusions, and sprains. Many other cultures have used noni fruit as well. For example, the Chinese have used it for the digestive system, kidneys, heart, and liver.

Today, noni fruit is available in a wide variety of formats, including juices, powders, capsules, even soaps and shampoos. Used in conjunction with modern medicine, the noni fruit can be a valuable health supplement.

The Food in Tahiti

The Polynesian country of Tahiti is famous for its food. While in Tahiti, the best way to experience its culture is through its food. Because Tahiti was isolated from outside influences until only two to three hundred years ago, its cuisine is some of the most unique in the world, with distinctly Polynesian characteristics, although many of today's restaurants in Tahiti offer Polynesian food with influences from cultures all over the world.

Fish and other types of seafood can be found at every meal and in every restaurant. Traditional Tahitian fare includes poisson cru, raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime juice. This is considered the national dish of Tahiti, and there are many versions of it, including a few with French or Chinese influences.

Other foods that are popular in Tahiti include tropical fruits, seafood, and pork. Many dishes in Hawaii use coconut milk, such as 'papaya chicken,' which combines coconut milk, papaya, and chicken. The casse-croute is a local sandwich that is a favorite of Tahitians and tourists alike. Most red meat and poultry is imported from New Zealand; as a result, you'll see less beef and chicken on the menu here than in other areas of the world.

Mangoes, melons, pineapples, grapefruits, and banana can be found at street markets throughout the country. For those looking for more exotic fruits, sample the lynchee, rambutans, or the pamplemousse, a huge grapefruit. Tahiti's pineapples are known to be the sweetest in the world, and there are also more than 300 varieties of banana grown here.

For dessert, try Faraoa coco, or coconut bread. Firifiri, donuts in a figure-eight shape, are a mouth-watering dessert often dipped in coffee. Finally, perhaps the most famous dessert in Tahiti is Poe, a baked dish made of papaya wrapped in banana leaves. The national drink of Tahiti is Hinano, a type of beer, while tropical cocktails made with local fruits are also quite popular.

Most food in Tahiti is traditionally eaten with the fingers, although food stands are quite accustomed to tourists asking for a fork or spoon, and restaurants are increasingly using western-style table settings. The food is traditionally cooked not in an indoor oven, but in an ahimaa, or hole dug into the ground. The food is wrapped in banana leaves and placed in this hole. This method is very similar to the method used in Hawaii to roast a pig during luau festivities. The process of cooking using this method can take several hours, but it has tender and delicious results, often with meat literally falling off the bone.

In addition to these traditional tastes, Tahiti is also famous for its gourmet restaurants, especially on Bora Bora and Moorea, two of the most popular tourist destinations within Tahiti. These restaurants, particularly those in luxury hotels, offer diners magical views of the lagoon and delicious gourmet foods, including traditional Tahitian fare as well as Americanized dishes. Many feature Polynesian entertainment such as dancers and musicians.

In Papeete, known as Tahiti's food capital, you can find a wide variety of restaurants offering nearly every world cuisine, from French and Italian restaurants to Chinese and Vietnamese dishes. Often, these recipes feature a Polynesian flair mixed with the traditional tastes of other countries. Many of these restaurants are also dinner and dance shows.

Natalia Fernandez, a Tango Singer Like Her Mother Stella Milano

Natalia Fernandez as the daughter of tango singer, Stella Milano was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina yet it was at the age of four that she along with her family moved to the United States. It being by the age of ten that she started to perform on stage along side her mother yet even back then she had a style of her own and though she, like her mother was a tango singer; she brought the youth of a new generation to the music her mother had taught her. Stella Milano even seeing fit to give her daughter a spot in her show "New Age Tango" in which Natalia Fernandez's version of Gardel's classic "El Dia Que Me Quieras" demonstrated her ability not only as a singer but one capable of adding something new to the music she had grown up on.

I however for my part did not hear Natalia Fernandez sing until I heard her album "Insanity" on which she show cases her vocal skills as well as song writing capability in creating "Latin Tango" which takes influences from both her Argentine background as well as "Afro-Latin" music. she feeling there was a certain insanity about this album, given all the different types of music which led her to entitle this her first recording "Insanity". Natalia Fernandez feeling it was this title which best captured the essence of the music she wished to present on her first ever recording. Natalia Fernandez even taking elements from light jazz as to make her first adventure in recording a southing one, filled with the tenderness of her voice along with that of her passion for the music she loves which can clearly be felt in "Insanity". This album containing the title song of the album "Insanity" along with other songs such as "Nostalgia" and "Malena". The last of these two songs being inspired by a woman who also sang the tango yet was reported not to have offered much to the art apart from the sex appeal which Natalia Fernandez also includes in her performances.

Regarding Natalia Fernandez's performances, I would say that it is there where she truly demonstrates not only her ability as a vocalist but as a performer and entertainer, capable of bringing modern showmanship in to tango. Natalia Fernandez knowing full well how to use all the elements of not only her youthful body but sex appeal in what can be described as a grand spectacle of the tango. Natalia Fernandez's shows being another element she adds to the tango, as she not only entertains with her voice but personality. Natalia Fernandez taking this element from her mother while adding a lot of her own special charisma to make her shows something truly worth watching as she follows in Stella Milano's footsteps.

Hawaii's Oldest Island: Kauai

One of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai, is sometimes referred to as "Hawaii's Island Of Discovery". That's because Kauai is Hawaii's oldest island, yet it's constantly changing to enlighten and satisfy all the many visitors who go there.

One can find shops and restaurants bustling with activity alongside the many vendors working the highways and by-ways to sell flowers, a variety of fish and lots of fruit.

On Kauai's west side on the beach on Kekaha, an old sugar camp house sat for years awaiting restoration. Finally, this facility along with an historic 5-bedroom house, has now joined Waimea Plantation Cottages as a restored plantation- style home bringing the cottage count now to 50.

Heading east to Kalaheo, two houses have been added as rentals for vacationers. Although both sites are away from any beaches (and are more residential than resort-style), the accommodations are affordable, clean and comfortable. Plus, guests do not need to be concerned with minimum stays or cleaning fees.

Vacationers here can even enjoy more perks like a hot tub, free tennis court usage, beach gear, boogie boards and snorkel equipment.

On the south side, reconstruction of a hotel (Waiohai Hotel), damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, has been completed. This property was converted into timeshares---200 2-bedroom accommodations in nine buildings.

Catering to the upscale market, 22 units in the Poipu Kai Resort were added measuring 1,700 to 2,000 square feet. These condos have air conditioning, featuring walk-in showers made of glass block, complete with designer furnishings. Oh and for kitchen lovers, there's Corian countertops throughout. Visitors here will agree this place is a pleasant, nicely-manicured resort, complete with pool and ocean-front units.

Also in the Poipu area, roughly a block from the ocean, is a quiet setting with restored former residential rentals featuring hardwood floors, hot tubs and walk-in showers. Here one finds a feeling of seclusion in this lovely place called Hideaway Love Villas.

For those visitors wishing to be pampered while staying at Poipu, there is another setting of three 2,600 square-foot units: two at ocean front; one with an ocean view. Here, at Kauai Cottages at Poipu Beach, a guest gets elegant furnishings, high-speed Internet access---complimented with tennis and honeymoon packages. The honeymoon packages come with a cold bottle of champagne upon arrival PLUS a chef will even prepare a delicious meal! So, be assured to find a lot of romance when staying in these private, beautifully- landscaped cottages.

As the continual proliferation of vacation rentals marches on, the south side of Kauai will doubtless feel some growing pains. More commercial development will need to keep pace---town squares, shops, restaurants and grocery stores will blanket the landscape.

Approaching Lihue, one finds what used to be one of the "off limits" in Kauai---until a 3,000 acre ranch owner opened his property to small tours. This was a former sugar plantation now managed by Kipu Ranch Adventures. Here, a visitor can enjoy the land as it sprawls from hilly terrain to coastal beaches. These beaches offer common sites of turtles, seals and yes, even dolphins!

Should visitors have a passion for Polynesian dancing, attending a three-day Kauai Polynesian Festival event is an absolute treat. Located at the Kukui Grove Park and Pavilion on Highway 50, guests are entertained by local Hula troupes, dancers from Somoa, Tahiti and as far away as New Zealand. The festival usually held in late May, boasts international craft displays, intereresting booths and an abundance of local cuisine.

While in Lihue, check out the fascinating yet unusual museum known as the Kauai Veterans' Center Military Museum. Here, the die-hard war-buff can view displays of weaponry donated by local soldiers of Hawaii who fought in World War II and in Vietnam. There are even archives from combat units dating back to the Spanish American War.

Making your way on Kauai's east side north of Lihue, visitors discover the little community of Kapaa. Here you find the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum specializing in the developmental needs of kids under five years in age. Parents are welcome to gather information about community resources and services as well as on child development. One will be very impressed with the numerous special toys and playground equipment---all designed for the stimulation of kids' brains and muscles.

As you leave Kapaa and continue northward on Highway 56, prepare yourself for all the congestion due to a construction boom. Surprisingly, an oasis appears revealing the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park. Guests are permitted to tour the grounds where gardens feature exotic vegetation, hardwood trees, even dozens of statues made of bronze. Two of the most recently added statues depict a young Hawaiian with his father planting a mahogany tree; and the other was installed adjacent to the ponds along the garden's birdwalk, called "Still Life" which is a likeness of a blue heron.

For the hiking enthusiasts, Princeville Ranch has a fantastic hiking tour lasting five hours over ranch land hosting some awe-inspiring viewpoints. This tour even features an exciting area where you must swing on a chain to advance off a small cliff. At the end of the hiking is Kalihwai Falls, providing the visitor/hiker with a refreshing dip and a fulfilling lunch.

There is a place on Kauai debated to be the most remote place on the island: Hanalei Colony Resort. There are no phones and no televisions. Renovations are underway upgrading these condos from one bath to one and a half baths. Workers minimize their building efforts, however, to focus on the most important detail: Don't Disrupt the Quiet-Seeking Patrons! As remote and quiet as this resort remains, wedding, honeymoon and small meeting groups are always welcome.

Yes, Kauai is continually offering its visitors something pristine and glorious. It's an adventure into Paradise not soon forgotten.

A Small List of Bora Bora Accommodations

As Bora Bora is known to be an internationally preferred tourist destination, a number of accommodation options are available for guests to choose from. From very deluxe resorts with overwater bungalows to medium priced resorts along the shores of white sand beaches, there is an ideal package for everyone.

The family on vacation, the CEO on a business convention, the spring break vacationers, the honeymooners, they all have a place in Bora Bora, as Bora Bora Accommodations are congruently varied, just as how majestically beautiful the island is.

Bora Bora accommodations can be categorized into two; there are Hotels and Resorts, which are obviously the more expensive, and Lodgings in Privates Residences, which pose to be the cheaper alternative to deluxe hotels and resorts.

Bora Bora Accommodations: Hotels and Resorts

As an international tourist spot, internationally known five star hotels and world class resorts can be found in the island.

Bora Bora Dive Resort

Bora Bora Eden Beach Hotel

Bora Bora Lagoon Resort (Orient Express)

Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa (Starwood Luxury Collection)

Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort

Club Med Bora Bora

InterContinental Resort and Thalasso Spa Bora Bora

InterContinental Le Mona Beach Bora Bora

Le Maitai Polynesia Bora Bora Hotel

Le Meridien Bora Bora

Sofitel Bora Bora Beach Resort

Sofitel Motu Bora Bora Beach Resort

St. Regis Resort Bora Bora

Though the degree varies from one hotel/resort to another, most Bora Bora Accommodations host various activities for their guests. The most "basic" of which would be scuba diving excursions, snorkeling, kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing and other popular water sports. Island exploration packages are also among the most common activity packages, likewise island tours, giving guests an in depth view of the island.
Depending on the available facilities hosted by the hotel/resort, sports like tennis and volleyball can also be catered to.

Bora Bora Accommodations: Smaller Hotels and Lodgings in Private Residences

Federation Haere Mai (Guesthouses and Pensions)

Mai Moana Island

Private Island Bora Bora

Rohotu Fare Lodge

Village Temanuata

As the cheaper alternative, for travelers with a care for their budget, Smaller Hotels and Private Residence Lodgings come to their aid. Not everyone can shell out money like they grow on trees, so these "smaller scale" Bora Bora accommodations come in to rescue guests with such concerns, still providing the "basics" in travel accommodations.

Perhaps their greatest win over more top of the line lodgings is their "intimate" closeness to Bora Bora, giving guests a more in-touch feel of the island. The "basic" activity packages offered by more upscale lodgings can still be met, as a number of private scuba diving services/rentals can be found within the shores of Bora Bora.

The bottom line is, be you stay in a deluxe hotel/resort, or in a small hotel, you'll still be in Bora Bora. As Bora Bora accommodations vary, the bottom line is it is still Bora Bora.

Mutiny To Tahiti And French Polynesia

Since the age of explorers Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook, legendary Tahiti has tickled imaginations worldwide. More recently, Tahiti became the most famous Polynesian island of all when Clark Gable (1935), Marlon Brando (1962), and Mel Gibson (1984) played the role of Fletcher Christian in three blockbuster Mutiny on the Bounty films. Even the horrendous French nuclear testing program from 1966-1996 did little to dampen this image.

For the modern traveler, there's no getting around the fact that French Polynesia is expensive. Bora Bora is easily the most upscale tourist destination in the South Pacific with 17 resorts charging over US$250 double a night without meals. Yet it's also true that you can greatly reduce your costs if you book your top end hotel rooms as part of a package tour. Another option is to stay in small locally-operated pensions. Bora Bora has seven hostels and pensions in the US$50-100 range and Moorea has 11. On Moorea you can also camp.

Most visitors get around the islands by air, and Air Tahiti operates efficient services to 46 islands and atolls in French Polynesia. Here again, you can save money by purchasing one of Air Tahiti's 28-day air passes. A Society Islands air pass will cost around US$400, or US$550 if you add on the Tuamotu Islands. The only interisland boat trip which is easy to do is Tahiti to Moorea which operates every two hours and costs US$10. Passenger-carrying cargo boats do ply from Tahiti to Bora Bora several times a week, but they're basic and the overnight trip can be rough. If you want to experience the boat trip one way, you're better off flying from Tahiti to Bora Bora and then returning to Tahiti by boat. I explain why in my guidebook, Moon Tahiti.

Car rentals in French Polynesia average US$100 a day - expensive! Options include renting a bicycle instead of a car (on Moorea and Bora Bora) or traveling by le truck or public bus (on Tahiti). Four-wheel-drive safari tours are offered on all the main islands and these are also cheaper than renting a car. On Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, and Bora Bora, there are sightseeing tours by outrigger canoe.

When to go? May to October is the cooler, less humid time, although prolonged rainfall is possible yearround. An optimum time to be there is for the Heiva festival on Tahiti, Huahine, and Bora Bora in early July. Whatever, don't miss attending at least one Island Night at a fancy resort for the wild tamure dancing and drumming. These happen several times a week. You can often avoid the high cost of the buffet by settling for a drink at the bar.

One thing you won't encounter in French Polynesia - unless you spend most of your time at a large resort - is a tourist glut. French Polynesia gets only 200,000 tourists a year compared to the six million who visit Hawaii. Geographically, Tahiti is actually east of Hawaii, and the flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti takes only 7.5 hours, just 2.5 hours more than it takes to fly to Hawaii. My most memorable experience in French Polynesia? The cruise to the Marquesas Islands on the Aranui, something I hope to do again very soon.
