The Best of Universal Orlando

So you've done Walt Disney World and now you're ready to discover Universal Orlando. But where to start? Universal Orlando is a whopper of a destination composed of exceptional resorts, first-rate restaurants, and two theme parks offering a certain brand of high-speed intensity certain to please. Here are some of Universal's best experiences:

Best Deluxe Resort

For the height of luxury in a Mediterranean seaside setting head straight for this exclusive hotel designed to resemble Italy's idyllic seaside town of Portofino. The scenery is pure postcard with colorful fishing boats bobbing in the seductively curving bay, sun-bleached stucco buildings with shuttered windows and trompe l'oeil decorative facades, and a charming, waterside piazza loaded with appetizing restaurants. Guestrooms are large and luxurious with four-poster beds, luxe linens, down pillows, and a pile of other amenities that can't be beat.

Best Resort For the Utterly Cool

Hard Rock's motto is "love all, serve all" and serve they certainly do at the single coolest place in Florida to hang out in California hip style. It's a mix of pure luxury and star worship where an ultra slick marble lobby, a marvelous pool complex, and stylish guestrooms are interspersed with over one million dollars worth of rock and roll memorabilia and rock music blasting away in every public space; over 900 speakers are scattered throughout the property, all running seven days a week, 24 hours a day. But rest assured, from the moment you enter the hallways leading to your trendy guestroom, only beautiful silence is heard.

Best Resort Pool

Hard Rock's 12,000 foot zero-entry pool is almost too hip to handle. It comes with an underwater sound system and a 250-foot slide (the longest at any U.S. hotel), all surrounded by a sand beach and swaying palm trees. For the ultimate in luxury, rent a poolside cabana equipped with lounge chairs, TV, telephone, fax line, refrigerator, and ceiling fan. You can even order up your own private masseuse.

Best Resort Lounge

It depends. The hip crowd should head to Velvet, Hard Rock Hotel's so cool cocktail lounge offering a huge list of specialty martinis and premium cigars along with rock and roll, chic seating, and a great outdoor terrace with a view of the resort's pool. Those with a more sophisticated inclination will love Bar America at Portofino Bay Hotel where a pianist entertains a fashionable crowd feasting on Beluga caviar and fine wine in an elegant setting.

Best Attractions For Thrill Seekers

Universal Orlando is the perfect place for those who crave a rush of adrenaline. And the best park for thrills is Universal's newest, Islands of Adventure. Head first to the
Incredible Hulk Coaster where you're launched from a near standstill to 40 mph in 2 seconds, then immediately into a zero-G dive roll looping through inversion after inversion and twice
underground before coming to a halt. Then take a ride on Dueling Dragons, the world's first inverted, dueling (there's two of them), near-miss coasters. At certain points during the ride
you'll swear your dangling feet almost touch those of the opposite dragon as it goes roaring by.

Best Way to Spend an Evening Without the Kids

First check the children into one of the Universal resort's excellent child care centers. Then head to either Emerils at Citywalk, a classy spot reminiscent of the New Orleans warehouse district with intoxicating Creole/Cajun food or Tchuop Chop at Universal's Royal Pacific Resort, one of the most beautiful restaurants in Orlando serving innovative Asian/Polynesian fare. Afterward dance the night away at Universal's Citywalk. Buy a Party Pass for unlimited admission to all the nightclubs and enjoy!

Best Resort Restaurant

It's a toss up. Tchoup Chop at the Royal Pacific Resort for it's breathtakingly beautiful dining room and imaginative cuisine or Bice, Portofino Bay Hotel's stylish and sophisticated Italian restaurant perched above the piazza overlooking the bay.

Best Way to Spend an Afternoon Away From the Parks

Immerse yourself in luxury with one or two soothing spa treatments at Portofino Bay's Mandara Spa. Choose from a variety of massage, face, anti-aging, and body treatments including Indonesian four hands massage and Javanese Lulur. Follow this with an afternoon lazing beside one of the resort's three luxurious pools.

Briefly In Borneo: AFS Sight Inspection

I embark on a journey of jet-lag so hard core, it could challenge an astronaut. Borneo beckons because I've never been there. A mere 5 hours to LAX, 12 to Tokyo, 7 to Singapore and 3 to Kota. Mind you this is just one way not including layover times. Seated in economy class, I expect my body will dehydrate to a prune, my muscles atrophy, pore's clog and I'll bloat with "jet belly" but it's ok. Bottom line is, I love airplanes. The near insanity of this that it's only a 5 day visit and I'm spending nearly as much time on land as I will in the air.

The best perk of my job are the site inspections, that is to witness first hand what my groups will experience if a destination is new to me. This is far on my globe. Prior to departure, I surveyed friends asking them," Where is Borneo?" Only 10% answered correctly. This time I bring Terry and wonder of his fortitude in tow. But he proves to be a good aviation warrior.

On our arrival flight in, I see gleaming white beaches, turquoise reefs and coconut trees that spread out as far as the eye can see. At the airport, we are greeted by Martin who will oversee us and answer the 7,000 questions I've prepared on this land. It's sauna hot. We head out past cocoa and tea plantations for our first resort stay at Shangri La Tanjung Aru, an oasis of luxury right on the South China Sea. In the distance are 5 coral islands. A short jetty ride will deposit you to any one for snorkeling the sea caves and world-class diving. Further out is Pulau Tiga with its mud volcanoes where the first Survivor series was shot.

Here we're spoiled like a couple of pot bellied pigs with an upgraded suite with fruit and orchids as well as a beachside massage. I feel like I've reached Nirvana with a mantra of "I'm not worthy" but I revel in all the amenities. It's pure playtime with activities provided here. And the spectacular Malaysian buffet breakfasts should be filmed by the Food Channel.

Kota Kinabalu (aka "KK") is the capital of Sabah with 340,000 inhabitants. My expectations of Borneo were of 5' monitor lizards and head hunting tribal chiefs, but here I'm greeted with Starbucks and mega-malls. The city is worn and struggling hard to develop itself. Established by the British in 1881, it also has a lot WWII history. The city's backdrop is the breathtaking 13,600 ft. Mt. Kinabalu, UNESCO W.H. Site for being the most bio-diverse mountain on earth. It holds a complete ecosystem and is a botanical paradise. There's an astonishing array of rare flora and fauna such as insect eating plants, funky fungi and raffelsia, the worlds largest flower of 3' petals. It takes 2 years to bud and lasts just 7 days. The lush National Park is the size of Singapore. Hillside tribes reside on the slopes. The mountain is scared to them as they believe it is the resting place of their ancestors departed spirits.

For free time we tour museums, handicraft markets and water village. I buy gifts of pearls, organic teas, coffee, batik and baskets. As Americans, we feel like VIP tourists as most visitors are from Australia, UK, Japan and Europe. The locals are so respectful and polite. There are 30 ethnic groups speaking 80 different languages who live harmoniously together. Many are animists who worship all living things. The main tribes are the Dusuns with their female priestesses, the Bajau's known as the "cowboys of the sea" and the Murats who live in typical longhouses. They are descendants of the famed head hunters who once fiercely protected their territories and decorated their homes with "trophies" that were severed heads of their invaders. Many here look Polynesian. Bahasa Malay is the main language, a dialect that sounds to me like they're speaking in tongues. Second language is English.

In August I bring 2 groups here. We'll enter the interior to discover the essence of Borneo with its virgin rainforests, lush wetlands and enough wildlife to feel you've entered a living zoo. (See our website to order my itinerary on this eco-adventure.) We'll learn of the culture and history but the thrilling part for me will be seeing the rare species of pigmy elephants, Sumatra rhino, giant crocs, bearded pigs, gibbons, macaques and omni-present proboscis monkeys (the one's with Jimmy Duranti noses.) The highlight will be Sepilok, the largest orangutan sanctuary where we can get close and personal with these "wild men of Borneo."

Evenings by the ocean here provide a surreal beauty that envelopes one in serenity and it's totally romantic. I hate to leave but it's time to visit another resort I have booked for my groups. The Shangri La Rasa Ria is a slice of heaven where one can do nothing or everything. There's morning yoga, Tai Chi, golf, ATV's, horses, para sailing, a huge spa and more. Classes are given in Malay language, cooking, sarong wrapping, beading, blow pipes and weaving. But what makes this resort ultra-special is its Nature Reserve. The hotel helps fund orphaned orangutans here. If the jungle continues to shrink, these gentile creatures will face extinction in the wild. Dr. Galdikas of OFI (Orangutan Foundation Int.) grimly predicts, "Unless extreme action is taken soon, these forests could be one in 5 to 7 years and the wild orangutan with them."

We attend a lecture by a ranger to learn about the "man of the jungle", world's second largest ape. Genetically they are 96.4% human and are considered the most sentimental creatures on earth. We are led by trail up mountain slopes to view 7 protected baby orangutans, most orphaned from illegal logging that destroyed their homes. Unlike other primates, they prefer playing over fighting. "Limon" had a tough early life. His mother was killed and eaten by plantation workers. They kept him as a pet chained to the wall of a wooden crate for 4 years until Forest Police rescued him. When he arrived here, he was a sack of bones and dying. For 10 days he refused to eat until one day, a sweet pineapple changed his life. He devoured it in entirety and since then, Limon hasn't stopped eating. Now he's 5 times heavier and stuffs himself silly. Upon graduation, he will be released back into the forest. It's touching moments like these that stir my passion for travel.

The tiny country of Brunei is a mere 30 minute flight away and has always been on my "destination dream list." Now so near yet no time. I've studied this sultanate where 460,000 residents enjoy the world's highest per capita income due to off shore oil. Everything is free for them and the Sultan of Brunei is wealthier than Bill Gates. There is zero nightlife and alcohol is banned, but I need this stamped in my passport because it's there.

I look forward to my return and experiencing the real mystical Borneo. The best journey is always the one going home. As I board Singapore Airlines, I feel I've gained 6 kilos from all the seafood I consumed. I sleep like a baby on the long haul home via Taipei. The miracle of it all is that my checked luggage managed to follow me 19,000 miles round trip and the fact that I still love airplanes.

How to Make Money on Disney Florida vacation tickets and hotel

Walt Disney World Resort has learned one of the best adventure holidays in the world today. I must admit, I like, and 40 years without children, I enjoyed it as much as a 10 years, who loves Disney!

So what is so special to all Walt Disney World Resort? Well, it's just so much to do in such a short time is incredible! The reason why I'm writing this book is that the reader is not just a small taste of what we expected, especially assaving value to make your vacation to be absolutely awesome.

Disney has four theme parks, two water parks, 23 themed hotels and a fleet of 12 monorails also working at Walt Disney World Resort joins the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, the Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Hotel Florida together.

When I first flew to Disney from the UK, many, many years, only information that you could get were from High Street travel agents, which more or less a monopolywhere and when you could stay, tickets to the parks at exorbitant prices, expensive hotels, flights etc high price
But today things have changed dramatically, the World Wide Web holds the Disney tickets, Disney hotel reservations a breeze, God save the WWW!

In any case, going forward, there has never been easier than it is today, a trip around the Disney resort, and is not the opposite! But even with all the information here (perhaps too much time!), Plowsasking all Web sites, it is still possible, if it is actually the best deals!

Flight and hotel packages or separate flights and hotel bookings can only, tickets cost Disney alone is a family of four hotels with high price and low seasons when visiting Orlando and Disney World is to wade through a difficult task, even eating can be huge in the big tourism centers expensive.

All these things and more, must be considered when you go and book yourHoliday. How did I get to Disneyland (only two of us), our whole package for two weeks, almost 3850 pounds (over $ 5000 U.S. dollars), was at once as cheap!

Now it is probably about the same cost for a family of four or five years when I paid for two, but hey, your still cost a bundle if not properly budget and make savings on all these important things, as always discounts to 5, 7 and 10 days Park Hopper Ticket Upgrades - The details of the exchange orUpdate your Disney tickets. When it makes sense - and when it will actually cost money?

Tropical Getaway on the Tiny Island of Samoa

If you drew a line from the tip of New Zealand, up to Hawaii and then down to the Easter Islands you would be looking at what is known as the Polynesian Triangle, and somewhere within this combined group of over 1000 islands is the tiny Independent Nation of Samoa, a culture lovers paradise of tropical palms, beaches untouched by tourism and people of all ages who do nothing but smile.

Many people I meet have never even heard of the tiny islands of Samoa, and those who have, usually associate it with incredibly powerful rugby forwards or WWF wrestling giants, namely Dwayne Johnson, aka 'The Rock'.

Samoa is a place that has produced some of the most naturally powerful men on this planet since the Greek Gods of Olympus, and yet still it offers so much more, all of which is guaranteed to satisfy ones need for visual delights. One of the things I find most appealing about this little known South Pacific destination is how well it has retained its cultural identity.

Unlike some of the more commonly known Polynesian destinations like Hawaii, Fiji and Tahiti, where westernism and garish tourism is all that is left of traditional customs; Samoa still lives and breathes an ancient culture. It is the only Polynesian country where the government recognises the ancient tribal customs enforced by the Matai (chiefs) as part of modern law, and amazingly manages to keep the two systems working together side by side.

If not for the golden arches of MacDonald's looming over the capital of Apia, one would be forgiven for thinking you were walking the set of Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, with much of Apia remaining just as it was in the 1930's.

The clapboard building where Robert Louis Stevenson once lived still stands, though today houses a lovely bar and restaurant. The locals go about their business in their traditionally lay back 'poly style', synonymous with the tropics, and the grinning barefoot children swat flies from their parents market stalls with traditional fans while sipping milk from fresh coconuts.

Leave the main town and you will drive through one village after another where the locals will be enjoying a game of volleyball and will happily invite you to play. You'll see the local chiefs watching over the village with their tribal tatau (tattoo) poking through the tops of their lava lava (sarong) belying the extent of their bravery when the tattoo was first carved from waist to knee. Children will be swinging from the branches of mango and breadfruit trees, picking tonight's dinner, and inside their open air fales (houses) you'll see the occasional two door fridge and big screen TV just to remind you they are not entirely forgotten by modern society or ignorant to its comforts.

Samoa provides the traveler who is hungry for a real cultural experience, free of crowded beaches and spruiking tourism operators, the opportunity to visit and even participate in a world where ancient culture is still in play and natural unadulterated beauty abounds. Visit Samoa and you'll be planning your next visit before you have even left its idyllic shores.

Hawaii One Day Tours Are Worth The Money

The first place many people want to go when they arrive in Hawaii is the beach. After being on a plane for so many hours, it can be relaxing and refreshing. After that, when visitors go back to their hotel rooms they usually pick up brochures and wonder what they will be doing for the rest of their vacation. Planning Hawaii one day tours in advance is a good idea, but once someone gets to Hawaii, they will find many more options that they had not considered. As well, if you haven't planned any trips, it is always a good idea to book a few instead of starting out on your own.

Eco Tourism Makes a Big Splash in Hawaii

Some Hawaii one day tours center around eco tourism. Eco tourism means taking a kayak down a river instead of a speed boat. It is also about getting close to nature without disturbing it. Because of the mountains, cliffs, rainforests, oceans, waterfalls and volcanoes, Hawaii has really been able to take advantage of eco tourism. Hiring a local guide to experience the real Hawaii is important if you want a truly satisfying eco-tour.

Oahu Nature Tours is another company that also offers eco tours. They have tours for any one interested in learning more about the island the island of Oahu. These different tours include some really spectacular sites of interest for people want to look at the natural side of Oahu. Their hiking tours will let you experience some of the most breath taking water falls in the world. Since Oahu has one of the largest white sand beaches in the world and the best surfing in Hawaii, they also offer a beaches tour. There are bird sanctuaries to visit, rainforest tours and educational tours. If you are staying on the island of Oahu, Hawaii one day tours are abundant.

Other Hawaii one day tours

If you are going to the Big Island, Atlantis Adventures Company can help with one day tours. Not only do they provide submarine tours, but they can help you with snorkeling, whale watching, diving, and helicopter tours. If you buy one or more tours from them, they will give you a package discount. Just imagine swimming with the many colored fish and other marine creatures or the thrill of watching the humpback whales on one of Atlantis Adventure Company's famous whale watching expeditions.

For tours that are a little slower paced, Hawaii one day tours also visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, and tours to Pearl Harbor and North Shore to see the memorials and visit ships like the S.S. Arizona are also available. You can always tour Hawaii on your own, but you'll miss out on the rich education only found when interacting with experienced and knowledgeable tour guides.

Popular Legends and Myths of Hawaii

The Hawaiian culture is full of nature based legends and mythology, much of it similar to that found in other Polynesian islands. As in every culture, these grew out of the need to explain the world around them. They explain how life came to be, and were passed from generation to generation orally. There are far too many deities to detail in one article, but here are a few of my favorites.

The Menehune are the magical "little people" of Hawaii. The legend is strongest on Kauai, where some traditions say the Waimea Canyon was home to the Menehune. These people are generally regarded as very mischievous and physically short, usually about two feet tall, although some were only six inches high. The hand-built walls, temples and fishponds are said to be the work of these master builders. Interestingly, the Menehune would work only at night under the glow of the moon, and if they were discovered or didn't get their project completed before dawn, they would abandon it. Fortunately, this didn't happen often.

Pele, the Goddess of Fire, is said to live today in the Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The legends vary in how Pele came to this place, but most say that she was born in Tahiti. She left her birthplace, maybe because she longed to travel, or because she was exiled by her father for her bad temper, or because she was chased from her home by her angry sister, whose husband she had seduce. Regardless of how it came about, Pele ended up in the Hawaiian Islands. First she sent to Kauai, then to Oahu, Molokai and Maui before settling on the Big Island. The best known of the legends about Maui is the bad luck curse she is said to put on anyone who takes rocks away from the islands. Thousands of pieces of lava rock are mailed back to Hawaii each year by people who claim to have had terribly bad luck since taking the rocks home.

The Night Marchers are another of my favorites. These are believed to be high-ranking ghost warriors or ali'i (ruler) spirits. They roam through specific places on certain nights, pounding drums, chanting and carrying torches. Some of the Night Marchers trails are rumored to be on Oahu -- the Pali Highway, Nuuanu Pali Lookout and Kualoa Ranch, among other. La Perouse Bay on Maui and the town of Kaunakakai on Molokai are other reported sites. IF you should happen to witness a night march, legend says you should crouch low, avert your eyes and play dead, else the Night Marchers will take your should and leave you dead. If you like ghost stories, take one of the Ghost Tours offered on Oahu.

There are many more popular Hawaiian legends and myths, among them Maui the trickster demi-god, Nana'ue the shark man, Laka the goddess of the hula, and Kane the father of living creatures. Many of these legends are still preserved and passed on today through the hula and the chants of the Hawaiian culture.

Surfing and the Environment - How Shaping Boards Can Make a Difference

Surfing is a sport that has ancient roots and was always close to nature. When the native Polynesian races needed to cut a kona tree for the purpose of making an olo board, a ceremony was organised as to ask for forgiveness for this act.

Surfers are usually quite involved and active with environmental issues but the surf industry that moves more than 7.2 billions dollar a year has a strong carbon print.

Nowadays surf boards are made from modern components, all issued from the petrochemical industry. Most of these products have a strong environmental impact from the foam blanks, to the fibreglass, the resin and even wax.

To this point, surf industry has not found a way to produce a 100% eco-friendly surf boards but there is ways to manufacture them in a less toxic manner.

The first point concerns the foam blank itself. To this point, blanks are made from the mixing of various chemicals, including the very carcinogenic Toluene diisocyanate which react to each other by expanding. Surf industry is now using more and more polyurethane surf blanks which is a bit less toxic than polystyrene. About 40% of a surf foam blanks end up in landfills. A southern California company now recycles old and wasted blanks to create new ones, with the same characteristics as the classic ones. Also some researches are done on working with biodegradable natural components such as crushed agave cacti to produce blanks that can be hand shaped the traditional way. Balsa wood boards are also a solution, as long as the balsa is farmed in a sustainable way. Look at what Australia is doing, I click.

Once a surf board blank is shaped, it has to be laminated with layers of fibreglass and resin to make it durable. Fibreglass manufacturing is a toxic industry but could be easily avoided with the use of bamboo to laminate the boards. Bamboo is easily grown and does not harm the soils. Its mechanical characteristics make it great for laminating surf boards, as it keeps some flexibility and is actually more resistant to impact then the traditional laminating process. A Hawaiian surf board shaper has been using it with success for more than a decade.

Another toxic material used is resin. To this point, there is no escape to using it. Polystyrene blanks need to be laminated with polystyrene resin. When using a polyurethane blank, it is epoxy resin that is needed. This epoxy resin gives out 50 times less VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) than the classic polyester and is less carcinogenic. Surf boards manufactured with epoxy are much more resistant then polyester hence making it a more eco-friendly product with this increase in durability. A bio-epoxy resin is now also used but it only has 30% of bio components. A lot of research is also made on a 100% soya based resin fine for the laminating.

How to Save Money on Florida's Disney Holiday Tickets and Hotels

Walt Disney World Resort has got to be one of the best Holiday adventures in the world today. I have to admit, I love it!, and at 40 years old with no kids, I enjoyed it as much as a 10 year old who loves Disney!

So what is so special about the Walt Disney World Resort anyway? Well there is just so much to do in so little time it is INCREDIBLE! The reason I am writing this article, is to give the reader not only a little taster of what to expect, more importantly how you can make value savings to make your vacation an absolutely fantastic one.

Disney has four theme parks, two water parks, twenty-three themed hotels and a fleet of 12 monorails also operate at Walt Disney World Resort linking the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, the Contemporary, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian resorts together.

When I first Flew into Disney from the UK, many, many years ago, the only information you could get was from High street travel agents, who more or less had a monopoly on where and when you could stay, tickets for the parks at extortionate prices, high priced Hotels, high price flights etc.
Nowadays though, things have changed dramatically, the World Wide Web has made getting hold of Disney tickets, booking Disney Hotels a doddle, God save the WWW!

Anyway, moving on, it has never been as easy, as it is today, to fit a Disney Resort trip around you and not Vice Versa! Still, even with all the information out there, (perhaps to much now!), plowing through all the websites, still leaves you wondering if you actually are getting the best deal!

Flights and hotel packages or separate flights and hotel bookings, Disney ticket Costs Alone can be enormous for say, a family of four, hotels with high and low price seasons when visiting Orlando and Disney World can be a daunting task to wade through, also dining can be expensive at the major resorts.

All of these things, and more, have to be taken into account when you go and book your holiday. When I first went to Disney, (just the two of us), our total package for 2 weeks was nearly £3,850, (over $5,000 dollars), at the time it was considered cheap!

Now it probably costs about the same for a family of four or five as i paid for two, but hey, Its still going to cost a bundle if you don't BUDGET properly, and make those all important savings on things, such as getting discounts on 5, 7 and 10 day park hopper Ticket Upgrades - The ins and outs of exchanging or upgrading your Disney tickets. When does it make sense - and when will it actually cost you money?

Disney Dining - Which Character Meal is the Best at Disney World?

Currently, there are 13 different restaurants at Walt Disney World that offer character dining experiences. So trying to decide which character meal is the best at Disney World is a little difficult. A lot of the answer to that question really depends on which characters you and your children would like to see.

Dining with the Disney Princesses

One of the most popular choices is to dine with the Disney princesses at Cinderella's Royal Table. Located in Cinderella's castle inside Fantasyland, Cinderella's Table offers a prix fixe menu. So you will be served your meal at the table. You can book reservations for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the princesses come to visit at all three meals. Breakfast is by far the most desired reservation at Cinderella's table as you will be sitting down to enjoy your breakfast before the Magic Kingdom even opens.

Either Cinderella's Royal Table or the Princess Storybook Dining buffet at the Norwegian restaurant in Epcot may be the best choices if you have little girls who just love the Disney princesses, but if you have little boys or older children who think princesses are for baby (so says my 8 year old niece!), then they might not be the best character meal for you.

So really, it is best to decide what Disney characters you enjoy and make plans accordingly.

Dining with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck or Winnie the Pooh and Friends

You will find Winnie the Pooh and his friends at The Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom. Donald Duck will be at Donald's Safari Breakfast at the Tusker House restaurant in Animal Kingdom. Mickey Mouse and Goofy hold court at either the Cape May Cafe in Disney's Beach Club Resort, or you can find them at Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Resort.

Chip & Dale usually show up at Chef Mickey's too, but you can also find them at the Garden Grill Restaurant in Epcot. Love Lilo & Stitch? They host the character breakfast at the 'Ohana restaurant in the Polynesian resort.

Your choice may also depend on what type of food you would like to eat. But for most options, this may be the easiest choice to make. Many of the character meals at Disney World are served buffet style. The most common cuisine is just standard American. In fact, of the 13 restaurants that offer character dining, they all offer standard American fare. So any picky eaters in your family should be just fine. Restaurants like 'Ohana's and Tusker House serve regional cuisines (Polynesian and African, respectively) at other times of day, but for their breakfast buffets, the menu is pretty much what you would expect for breakfast.

If you want to have a character meal that goes beyond the standard American menu, your best bet may be the Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall. Located at the Norway pavilion in Epcot, the buffet features some Norwegian specialties that will likely be new to you. And the picky folks will still have the American options too.

Planning Your Honeymoon on Bora Bora

When trying to make a decision about where you want to spend your Honeymoon, Bora Bora should be at the top of your list!

The Polynesian Island of Bora Bora is a very romantic place and the Island hasn't been spoiled by modern society.

A lot of couples never get to have a honeymoon so you should decide to make this happen if at all possible? Don't think for a moment that you'll fit it in some imaginary time in the future. You literally have to plan it and stick to it!

Planning and taking a real honest to goodness Honeymoon should be a high priority for you. If you don't set it in stone, you'll probably turn around one day and say, "You know, we never did get that honeymoon!"

So, get your calendar out and mark down the days following your wedding as your honeymoon. Then, you need to do some checking to find out how long your honeymoon will be.

You can begin to shop around and obtain the best prices if cost is a factor. June weddings in Bora Bora are especially beautiful the weather is cooler and generally not rainy.

Two things to consider in planning a June honeymoon on Bora Bora is that there will usually be more tourists during the months of March through October. Planning your honeymoon on Bora Bora during November through April usually means a better deal.

Also if you don't like the possibility of competition when going to the hot spots, or when going on excursions the maybe the wet season is for you.

If you choose to have your honeymoon during the rainy season you'll still have plenty of sunshine to work on your tan. But then, I didn't realize that you went on your honeymoon to work on a tan.

Hawaii Honeymoon

Your Hawaiian honeymoon is about to begin. Holding your beloved's hand, you sit back and close your eyes as the airplane lifts into the sky. In a few hours your honeymoon begins--for real--in Hawaii.

Perhaps it is tranquility you seek, wandering along trails or gardens amidst the fragrant smells of tropical flowers. Or perhaps it is exquisite food in a romantic restaurant that excites you.

With its warm weather and the beauty of its tropical scenery and pristine beaches, Hawaii is the most popular honeymoon destination in the United States. The four main islands are Oahu, the Big Island (Hawaii), Kauai and Maui.

For those who desire a more active time together in Hawaii, you can swim, snorkel, surf, sail or scuba dive. You can golf at some of the world's top golf courses. There are many tourist activities to be seen, including Polynesian cultural events, dinner cruises, helicopter
sightseeing tours and submarine rides. You can also sea kayak and mountain bike and hike through lush vegetation or volcanic hillsides.

The diversity of Hawaii is so great, that you could spend weeks on these islands and still not see all of its wonders. Knowing that your time will be limited, I have included a brief summary of each island along with two of the most highly rated honeymoon hotels or resorts on each island.

Oahu

Honolulu's Waikiki beach is perhaps the best-known beach in the U.S. Honolulu has many excellent restaurants, cultural and historic sites, fine hotels, nature trails and beaches. This is an exciting place if you want to be active during your stay.

Many people who visit Hawaii for the first time choose to arrive via Honolulu. By Hawaiian standards, Honolulu has reasonably priced accomodations and many opportunities for inexpensive flights or all-inclusive packages. Also, on Oahu's North Shore, some of the best surfing in the world can be found.

Two of the best honeymoon hotels on Oahu are in Honolulu.

The Halekulani, is a modern, airy hotel--a refuge, really. It has been operating since 1917, and is the only hotel in the state that has received a five-star rating from AAA. Outstanding service and excellent dining are the hallmark of the Halekulani.

The Hyatt Regency Waikiki across from Waikiki beach has excellent views of the beach, the surfers riding the waves, along with views of Diamond Head. You will be in the center of the action.

Big Island (Hawaii)

The Big Island has the most diverse ecology of all the islands. In the Waipio Valley, you can ride horseback, viewing huge waterfalls, thousand foot cliffs and black sand beaches. At Volcanoes National Park you can see the world's most active volcano, Kilauea.

The Kona coast (west side) is a seventy mile stretch of black lava-covered coastline, noted for its coffee and world-class deep sea fishing.

The summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in Hawaii, offers stargazing opportunities unlike any other place in the world.

As for honeymoon hotels, here are two of the best:

The Kona Village Resort on the island's west side is a nearly perfect honeymoon destination. Located on the beachfront, this hotel offers thatched-roof bungalows. You can swim, snorkel, explore marine life, attend a traditional luau or get a massage, all within this resort. Travel and Leisure Magazine has rated this as one of the world's top 50 romantic getaways.

Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows in Kohala offers many unique features. Palm trees and flowing pools greet you as you enter the atrium around which the hotel is centered.

Oceanfront rooms have dazzling views. With its accomodating staff and many services, this resort is exquisite. It features two of the island's best golf courses. The South course, built on a lava flow, has spectacular views.

Maui

Maui has both world-class resorts and rental condominiums to choose from amidst natural wonders.

Here you will find Haleakala National Park, Maui's main natural attraction. Hawaiians recognize the mountain as a sacred site. Many people drive from sea level to the 10,000 foot summit of the crater to watch the sunrise.

Along with the natural beauty on the road to Hana, Maui boasts some of the best beaches on the islands. It also has several top-rated (PGA Tour) golf courses. Snorkeling and scuba adventures abound on the west and south shores of the island.

If your vision of the perfect Hawaii honeymoon is to get away from it all and still have many comforts and conveniences, Maui is the place for you.

Hotel Hana-Maui, on the east coast of the island, is noted for its seclusion and luxury service, so if you want to slow-down and relax, this hotel is sure to please you.

Hotel Hana-Maui is a long drive from Kahului airport over twisting roads. If you wish to forego this adventure, flying into Hana airport from Honolulu is your best bet.

The Four Seasons Maui at Wailea is an exquisite property with an open courtyard of reflecting ponds, fountains and gardens. Nearly all the rooms have ocean views and lanais where you can watch the sunset and see whales in winter.

You can have a massage in the privacy of your own cabana, listening to the waves rolling in on Wailea Beach. Also, surrounding the hotel are great restaurants and shopping, in addition to the beach.

Kauai

Kauai, the Garden Isle, is covered with flowers and tropical vegitation unlike anywhere else.

There is no nightlife on this island, simply the magic and beauty of tropical paradise with emerald valleys and golden beaches.

The natural beauty of the island can be found along the NaPali coast or in Waimea Canyon. Called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon, with its reddish lava beds bursts with ever-changing color throughout the year.

This island offers miles of trails through tropical forests and along ocean cliffs, and has many opportunities for watersports and outdoor adventures.

Priceville Hotel on the North Shore's NaPali coast is richly furnished in a casually elegant style. It sits on a cliff between the crystal-blue waters of Hanalei Bay and the volcanic mountains. Most rooms have ocean views. With access to Puu Poa Beach, spas, tennis, river and
ocean kayaking, you can do as much or as little as you like. Private dinners on the beach are available if you desire a romantic evening together, and money is not a concern.

The Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa is on the South Shore. The grounds are exotic, and the multiple pools are incredible, meandering through diverse vegetation and terrain. With a golf course, multiple spas and five restaurants, you will never have to leave this resort if you don't want to. Of course this all comes with a high price tag, but if you are looking for luxury on your Hawaiian honeymoon, this is the place.

I hope your honeymoon in Hawaii is all that you want it to be. Remember: "There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved." -George Sands

Rarotonga, Cook Islands - Avarua and Titikaveka

Rarotonga is one of 15 islands that make up the Cook Islands nation. Being 20 miles in circumference, it is easily the biggest and as such it is known as the capital or main island. The Cook Islands in general can be found in the south Pacific and Rarotonga is one of the nine that make up the Southern Islands group.

Island Geography

The islands of the southern group are mainly volcanic in nature and Rarotonga is no exception. Although the volcano that created the island is no longer active, its outline shape is still recognisable when looking at the land mass from a distance. Most of the island is covered by a thick rain forest and the inhabitants tend to live in small townships close to the coastline.

One of the highlights of Raratonga is the exceptional lagoon that surrounds the island. This area of clear blue water stretches as far as the coral reef and is home to some of the rarest species of sea life in the Pacific.

How To Get There

You can fly to Rarotonga airport from any of the surrounding countries, e.g. New Zealand, Hawaii, Fiji, America and Australia. Some airlines run frequent flights to the island and from there smaller planes can carry you to any of the other 14 Cook Islands. Alternatively, a number of ocean liners stop at Rarotonga on their voyages and this is another route to the island. A third option - if you have the spare time and enthusiasm - is to hire a yacht and crew and sail across from New Zealand.

The Best Time to Visit

The temperature in the southern Cook Islands stays quite stable throughout the year and so summer is very much like winter. In the summer months - November to April - the temperature ranges from 21-29ºC, while in the winter months of May to October it drops slightly down to 18-28ºC. The main difference between the seasons is the rainfall and Rarotongas wet season normally lasts from January to May.

If you do not mind a bit of rain then you might want to look at when the islands main festivals and holidays are as these are definitely worth seeing.

Rarotongas Main Towns

There are nine towns on the island, most of which are accessible by foot. The main town is Avarua and this is where tourists can find the attractions they are looking for. Here you will find cafes, bars and lots of music, dancing and native Polynesian cooking. The island in general has stayed free from large commercial developments and Avarua shows the true nature of the country.

The second largest town on the island is Titikaveka and this is highly popular with visitors who enjoy diving and snorkelling. The lagoon in the area is easily accessible and the reef holds a wide range of sea life that is not seen in other areas of the island.

It is worth noting that the native inhabitants of Rarotonga are in the most part Christians and they strictly obey the laws of the Sabbath. This means that virtually every commercial venture on the island stops shortly before midnight on Saturday and does not reopen until Monday morning.

Things to do

As mentioned above, most of the island is covered by rain forest, however it is accessible to visitors. There are a number of tour operators that organise hikes through the centre of the island so that the true flora and fauna of the area can be seen up close. Because of the density of the forest in some places, it is advisable to book a professional guide.

Alternatively, there is also the option of a safari drive through the volcanic mountains and into the rain forest. These drives only take about half a day but they do reach areas of the island that are hard to reach on foot.

Raratonga is described as one of the top Cook Islands destinations for water sports and there are a variety of activities to take part in. These include snorkelling and diving, sailing, lagoon cruises and of course sea fishing. A number reef sections are no longer allowed to be fished and instead have protection orders in place. Surprisingly, the island also has a full size golf course and an outdoor market in the town of Avarua which is open everyday except Sunday.

Conclusion

Rarotonga is a true Polynesian island that has changed very little in the 5,000 years that it has been inhabited. Today it has a number of tourist attractions and is the most visited of the Cook Islands. Saying this, it has remained free from corporate development and so still offers an insight into the everyday lives of its local inhabitants.

Visiting Samoa - No Eating on the Run, It's Just Not Allowed

Samoa is believed to be the oldest of all the Polynesian cultures, with the islanders arriving on the shores of Samoa some 3000 years ago. The cultural practice of fa'asamoa (fah-ah-sah-maw-ah) has developed over these three thousand years and is simply translated as 'the Samoan way'.

So what is the Samoan way? Well, I could explain it in just one word, respect.

Samoan's are a very proud yet humble race, if such a description is possible. They hold their fa'asamoa very dear to their hearts and nothing will earn you their friendship more than by showing respect.

My Mother always said, making others comfortable is a sign of a good host, and Islanders are quintessentially good hosts. If you are ever lucky enough to visit this beautiful group of islands you can show your respect in return in a few simple ways.

For example, walking while eating and drinking is considered uncouth in Samoa. This was something my dear Samoan husband had neglected to tell me before my first visit there. While walking down the street in the capitol of Apia one day, I grabbed a banana, as you do, out of my bag, and proceeded to peel it and eat as we were heading to the market. I have to say I was not aware of any glares of disgust from the locals, my blonde hair and white skin must have helped me get away with it, but my husband quickly told me to pop it back in my bag and save it for later, explaining as we went that I was being really rude.

Naturally my first reaction was, what's the big deal, it's just a banana! It seemed a little petty to make an issue of such an every day act of eating on the run. Time is of the essence you know, multitasking is the word of the day, time waits for no man, why do tomorrow what you can do today? And then my own initial offence turned to simple acceptance of a logical practice.

In Samoa you see, food is a blessing, one that we sit down to partake of in gratitude for what we have. To walk around chomping away shows no gratitude and no respect for those around you. But to me it was a reminder that time should not be of the essence, multitasking was the bane of western existence and why should I do today what I could put off till tomorrow?

I had discovered that in Samoa, life was exactly as it should be, with a time and place for everything.

Maui Vacation Homes For Terrific Family Adventures!

There are so many terrific family adventures that await you at Maui vacation homes. For example, the Atlantis Maui Submarine Adventure and Royal Lahaina Luau combines the Atlantis Maui Submarine tour with a traditional Hawaiian feast at a dazzling oceanfront property on Kaanapali Beach with spectacular sunsets every evening - courtesy of Royal Lahaina Luau. The biggest attraction on Maui is more than 100 feet below the ocean and the Atlantis Maui Submarine Adventure is your ticket to see it. Take a once-in-a-lifetime undersea adventure in an Atlantis Submarine, the world's first and most technologically advanced passenger submarine and journey into a spectacular blue world in spacious air-conditioned comfort. To enhance the submarine experience and help improve the marine environment, an artificial reef was created in December 2005 by sinking the aged Carthaginian replica of a 19th century supply vessel. The sunken Carthaginian, which needed major repairs and would have been scuttled at sea otherwise, is anchored to a sandy bottom in 95 feet of water that is devoid of coral reef. The resulting artificial reef is developing into a self-sustaining habitat for indigenous fish, coral and other marine life. After a 15 minute trip to the dive site you will board the submarine and be submerged below the surface. You will be underwater for around 45 minutes before resurfacing and returning to the dock.

From December through May, you may enjoy whale watching during the ship-to-shore journey as humpback whales make their annual migration through the warm Pacific waters. A luau is a must for any Maui visit. This value-added package combines the Atlantis Maui Submarine Adventure with a traditional Hawaiian feast at a dazzling oceanfront property on Kaanapali Beach. The luau comes complete with lei greeting, Polynesian music and dance, imu (underground oven) ceremony, all-you-can-eat buffet, open bar for island beverages, and of course, the gorgeous Hawaiian sunset.

Another great adventure you can enjoy from your Maui villa is the Maui Molokini Crater Snorkel Cruise and Royal Lahaina Luau Combo. This snorkel cruise is very popular because you get to experience two of Maui's best destinations in one fun packed day! Your day begins with a 35 minute cruise to Molokini Crater where you can then spend an hour and a half in the water. Next you will proceed toward "Turtle Reef" (typically a 20 minute cruise) for an hour and a half more of snorkeling and water play. Arrive early for your luau and you can take part in traditional Hawaiian crafts that you'll find both interesting and fun. You'll know the feast is about to start when you witness the Imu Ceremony, the ancient tradition in which the roast pig is removed from the underground oven. You'll enjoy an amazing all-you-can-eat buffet dinner including modern American dishes and many Hawaiian delicacies.

Then it's time to be entranced by the hula, and the various songs, dances, and stories of the islands, topped off with the thrilling Samoan fire-knife dance! In season (mid-December through mid-May) your family can enjoy the Maui villas adventure of Maui Whale Watch and Royal Lahaina Luau Combo. Maui is the place to see humpback whales in their natural breeding area. The humpback whales make their home in the waters surrounding Maui. The whales migrate close to 3,500 miles from their Alaskan summer feeding waters, to the warm waters of Hawaii where they mate and have their calves. Then arrive early for your luau. This tour is seasonal and operates during the whale migrating season from mid December through mid May.

How to Enjoy the Culture of Fiji As a Tourist

Visitors to Fiji enjoy not only some of the world's best lagoons, with beautiful blue waters and the famous Rainbow Reef, but also rich history and culture spanning thousands of years. While you'll surely spend plenty of time on the beach while on vacation in Fiji, why not check out some of these cultural destinations to get a sense of traditional life in Fiji?

Meke dances - The Meke is a native dance performed by indigenous Fijians wearing leis and grass skirts. Although similar in importance to the hula dance of Hawaiian fame, the Meke is like nothing you'll see on any other island. Experiencing this culturally and historically significant dance is something that visitors to Fiji simply must do.

Fiji Museum and Historic Buildings - Indigenous Fijians are very proud of their heritage, something you'll notice immediately upon walking into the National Museum. The Fiji Museum is located in the beautiful botanical gardens of Suva Fiji, the capital city of Fiji. There, you'll find an archaeological collection dating back thousands of years, evidence of Fiji's long history. The lengthy history of Fiji can also be seen in its buildings, including the Parliament Houses and Sri Siva Subramaniya, a Hindu temple. Suva Fiji is also home to numerous historic buildings dating to the country's history as a British colony.

Suva Fiji, the Capital City - While you're in Suva to visit the Fiji museum, take plenty of time to absorb the local culture. Suva offers a very active nightlife, including live bands and other forms of entertainment popular with tourists and locals alike. If you're looking for a Meke show, Suva Fiji is a good bet on any night of the week. The city is also a popular destination for tourists looking for souvenirs, including carved Tiki masks and statues. The indigenous Fijian culture is still very much alive, and you'll get a one-in-a-lifetime chance to experience it in Suva Fiji.

Orchid Island - Looking to experience traditional Fiji culture? One of the most popular cultural destinations within Fiji is Orchid Island. There, you'll find a miniature display of the Fiji archipelago. This is a particular favorite of children and those who are on their first trip to the islands.

Sacred Caves - The islands of Fiji are known for beautiful caves, but they aren't just a sightseeing destination. The sacred caves of Naihere are prized by locals and tourists alike.

Fijian Tours - There are plenty of tours offered to vacationers in Fiji. Some will take you into the smaller villages, allowing you to take part in the daily life experienced by indigenous Fijians. A traditional Kava welcoming ceremony is often planned as part of these activities. If you want to go 'off the beaten path' to experience Fiji culture, then this might be the tour for you.

Like any tropical island vacation, Fiji offers white sandy beaches, palm trees, and beautiful blue skies. If you're planning a vacation to Fiji, don't forget to schedule plenty of time to visit cultural and historical sites, too, to take in the parts of Fiji that truly can't be found anywhere else in the world.

Romantic Florida Vacation Spots

Romantic Florida vacation spots are nestled around Florida, sometimes in the most surprising places. While there are the traditional beach sunrises and sunsets (very romantic if the beach is empty), you might want to consider some more unusual spots.

The kind that will make your sweetheart swoon and think you are the most romantic person there ever was.

Night Lights

No, I'm not talking about the big city here. I'm talking about getting away from the crowds and the lights so that you can sip champagne and look at the night sky in all its glory.

And here's a unique way to do this; rent a houseboat in the Florida Keys or Flamingo and put out to sea (so to speak) in Florida Bay. The water is calm and you can drift away from the city lights and gaze up at the stars and the moon. Don't forget the music!

Lover's Key

There's an island on Florida's Southwest Gulf coast called Lover's Key. It was originally named because you couldn't get there from the mainland without a boat, so it was an, ahem, secluded spot.

Now a road connects Lover's Key to the mainland, but it's still a romantic getaway. Why not take the sunset eco-tour cruise and enjoy the sun's rays lingering on the horizon while you get a chance to see natural Florida. Or maybe you'd prefer the morning dolphin tour and shelling excursion?

A Romantic Florida Wedding

You're thinking one of the Florida Keys, right? Wrong! I'm talking about a South Seas seriously romantic wedding in Walt Disney World, at the Polynesian resort. I know, Disney is a favorite of honeymooners, but you don't usually think of it as being romantic.

But if you want an over-the-top romantic wedding to remember for a lifetime, think about a fairytale wedding package at Cinderella's Castle, where you can have fireworks go off as you take your first kiss as husband and wife.

Other Romantic Florida Vacations

Daytona Beach has some interesting places for romance; one is The Shores Resort and Spa, where there are several couples packages. Enjoy champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, a moonlit beach stroll, breakfast in bed and spa treatments as well.

There are bed and breakfasts located all around the Sunshine State and many have special packaged designed for a romantic interlude. One off-the-beaten-path rendezvous spot is called Turtle Beach Inn, and it's appropriately located on Florida's "Forgotten Coast" -- the area from the Big Bend on the east to around Apalachicola on the west. It's small, cozy and secluded, with miles of pristine beaches.

How about staying on a resort that's on its own island? Little Palm Island in the Florida Lower Keys is indeed on its own island, with just 30 suites (28 of which are in thatch-roof bungalows). They have a five-day romance package that should make anyone go weak in the knees, what with champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, a steaming bath with rose petals...you get the idea.

Yes, we're known as the Sunshine State and sometimes the Tourist State, but we should also be known for our romantic Florida vacations.

So Much to See and Do From Oahu Vacation Rentals

There's just so much to see and do on Oahu besides Honolulu and Wakiki! Oahu vacation rentals are your best bet to explore the fascinating attractions which Oahu offers, such as Windward Oahu along the Kamehameha Highway. In Hawaii, windward refers to the eastern side of an island and leeward the western side. The prevailing winds in Hawaii blow east to west as opposed to the mainland where winds tend to blow west to east. Windward Oahu is the part of Oahu north of Makapuu Point all the way to Kahana Bay. The Kalanianaole Highway and Kamehameha Highway are the main roads that will take you close to all of the attractions on Windward Oahu. As you drive north on the Kalanianaole Highway past Makapuu Beach Park on your right and Rabbit and Turtle Islands off the shore, you will first come to Sea Life Park on your left. Much more commercialized than the Waikiki Aquarium, Sea Life Park is, nevertheless, a great place for a family outing. It's 300,000 gallon Hawaiian Reef Tank is filled with more than 2,000 species of fish. Other exhibits feature penguins, sea birds, sea lions, and the Whaler's Cove which is home to the park's dolphins and whales. With ongoing shows throughout the day, Sea Life Park remains one of Oahu's most popular attractions.

As you wind your way north from where you rent house Oahu and eventually come to the Kamehameha Highway, watch for the Kahekili Highway. The Kahekili Highway parallels the Kamehameha Highway but is a bit inland. If you take this road you will come to the Valley of Temples and the Byodo-In Temple. This temple is a precise replica in concrete of a 900 year old temple in Uji, Japan. The grounds of the temple are lovely. Chances are you'll see a wedding either going on or about to begin. After you rejoin the Kamehameha Highway you'll come to the intersection of Pulama Road. Up the road to the left you'll find the plantation and gardens of Senator Hiram Fong, which was opened to the public in 1988. Proceeding north on the Kamehameha Highway you will pass Mokolii Island, more popularly known as Chinaman's Hat, for obvious reasons. Before you reach the town of Laie and the North Shore of Oahu, you'll come to Kualoa Ranch. Most famous for the scene in Jurassic Park where actor Sam Neill runs for his life to escape a stampede of dinosaurs, Kualoa Ranch is not well known to most visitors. The ranch offers over 15 outdoor activities including ATVs, target shooting, helicopter rides and a ranch and movie set tour. Many choose just to relax at Secret Island, the ranch's secluded beach.

On Oahu's North Shore, apart from the amazing beaches where some of the world's largest surfing competitions are held annually, the area from Laie to Haleiwa is best known for two major attractions, the Polynesian Cultural Center and Waimea Valley Adventure Park. In Laie you will find the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hawaii's most popular privately owned attraction. Here you will find re-created villages of seven Polynesian cultures, Fiji, the Marquesas, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga and Hawaii. Representatives of these island cultures share their culture, their art and their dance. Activities abound at the Polynesian Cultural Center. The afternoon canoe pageant is a popular attraction as is the evening luau and show. If a drive to Laie is too far for you, there are many tour companies offering round trip bus transportation and admission from your hotel in Waikiki. After rounding the northern tip of Oahu, the Kamehameha Highway eventually makes its way to the town of Waimea, home to Waimea Valley Adventure Park. Owned the same company that runs Sea Life Park, Waimea Valley Adventure Park offers displays of cliff diving, hula, Hawaiian music as well as a nature center and adventure center including paintball and mountain biking. When planning your Oahu vacation, whether seeking a Hawaii villa, condo, or beachfront rental, call on the Hawaii experts - us! - for the latest information on the most popular Oahu attractions.

Visiting Waikiki

Waikiki is perhaps the most famous beach in the Hawaiian islands. Each year, thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to this stretch of beautiful white sand and clear blue waters. Most people plan to spend at least a couple of days sitting at the beach when planning their Hawaiian vacation. The temperature in Waikiki averages 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making the beach popular all year long. Whether you wish to sip a tropical drink while sitting under a palm tree, or are attracted to Waikiki for its world-class surfing, Waikiki Beach on Oahu is one of the most popular areas of Hawaii.

This beach is recognized for being the birthplace of modern surfing. Waikiki was the boyhood home of Duke Kahanamoku, who is recognized as the force behind the revival of surfing in the early twentieth century. Inspired by the ancient Hawaiians, who had surfed for hundreds of years, Duke popularized the sport both in Hawaii and elsewhere in the world. The Duke Kahanamoku statue near Waikiki Beach commemorates his achievements. Since the 1950s, Waikiki has been considered Mecca for many of the world's most popular surfers. Waikiki hosts many international surfing competitions each year.

When you arrive at Waikiki, you're likely to receive a lei, or floral wreath, to welcome you to Oahu. Those visiting Waikiki are sure to spend many hours enjoying the water and sand. In addition to surfing in the aquamarine waves or lounging on the sandy shores, Waikiki Beach also offers a summer outdoor movie series and "Brunch on the Beach," known for delicious traditional foods served by island chefs. Don't forget to check out Diamond Head volcano, which looms tall in the distance to create a picturesque view from a vantage point anywhere along Waikiki beach.

If you're ready to head inland following a weekend spent relaxing on the sand, a short walk away from the shore offers a selection of resort hotels, shops, restaurants, and Kapiolani Park. The restaurants in Waikiki are known for their delicious Hawaiian food in addition to cuisine from all over the world. Many of these resorts also play host to luaus, or traditional Hawaiian feasts. These outdoor shows feature local hula dancers and a traditional roast pig among other Hawaiian delicacies. Kuhio Beach Hula Mound, located on Waikiki, offers a free hula show nearly every summer evening.

Waikiki is also home to Waikiki Aquarium, one of the oldest aquariums in the United States. It is believed that this site inspired Jules Verne's submarine description in his book, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." On Kaluana Avenue, one of the main roads nearest the beach, the Wizard Stones are believed to hold the spirits of four ancient Tahitian priests, known as kahuna.

Waikiki has lured tourists for centuries, nearly since the beginning of European contact. In the mid-nineteenth century, the beach served as a recreational area for the Hawaiian royal family. During World War II, thousands of U.S. Soldiers visited this beach while on duty in Hawaii. In 1977, Waikiki became the setting for the TV show "Charlie's Angels." Over the past few decades, Waikiki has grown to become an even more popular destination for vacationers.

The History of Fiji

Fiji is a beautiful tropical paradise located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Because of its geography, this archipelago of over 300 islands has long been a crossroads for the meeting of many different island cultures, as well as a popular tourist destination. Fiji was part of an important trading route between various Pacific island cultures long before contact with Europeans. Over the centuries, a distinctly Fijian culture developed as a result of this rich mixture of cultures.

It is believed that the first settlers in Fiji came about 3,500 years ago from Southeast Asia, perhaps via Indonesia. Little is known of Fiji's early settlement, although archeological evidence shows that people had settled on the island somewhere between two and five thousand years ago. According to oral folklore, today's indigenous Fiji population was descended from Chief Lutunasobasoba, a Lapita chief and ancestor of modern-day Polynesians believed to have landed in Fiji. Some evidence suggests that the same Lapita group to settle in Fiji also came to Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, and other Pacific islands.

By the tenth century, the important Tu'i Tonga Empire in nearby Tonga brought Polynesian influences to Fiji, leaving an impact on the island's culture and language. Fijian culture was again impacted in the seventeenth century, when European explorers, missionaries, and whalers began to visit Fiji, although Europeans avoided the country for many years because the Tongans warned Europeans that Fiji was inhabited by dangerous cannibals. The first permanent European settlement on the archipelago is Levuka, founded in 1822. Soon after, Christian missionaries from Tahiti and Tonga began arriving in an attempt to convert the native Fijians to Christianity. The missionaries succeeded in converting several important Fijian chiefs.

During the nineteenth century, Fiji was the site of many battles between warring chiefs. This era was marked by several invasions and revolts. By the 1850s, Chief Cakobau had gained control of most of the islands. He had been converted to Christianity, and was largely influenced by connections with the western world. In 1858, he offered to cede the territory to the United Kingdom, in exchange for a payment of $40,000. However, the United Kingdom, realizing that Cakobau was not universally recognized as the King of Fiji, did not accept this proposal. In the 1970s, members of Cakobau's government again offered the territory to Britain, and in 1874 Fiji became a British colony.

During this time as a British colony, Fiji was subjected to many stresses. In 1875, an outbreak of measles left a third of the country dead. Between 1879 and 1916, over 60,000 indentured laborers would arrive from India to work in large sugar mills. During World War II, Fiji was turned into a training base for Allied soldiers. Thousands of Fijians fought in the Solomon Islands during the war, where they became well-known for their knowledge of tropical jungles.

Until 1963, indigenous Fijians, as well as Indian laborers, were not enfranchised, and had no representation in the colonial government. One of the highest ranking Fijian chiefs, Ratu Sukana, promised to fight for Fijian independence, continuing to push for independence until his death in 1958. Like many islands in the Pacific, Fiji remained a British colony for many years, before finally gaining independence in 1970. However, Fiji's route to independence has not been a smooth one. Several coup attempts as recently as 2006 demonstrate continuing strife between native Fijians, Indians, Europeans and other groups.
